The value of the testimonies of healing in the Christian Science...
The value of the testimonies of healing in the Christian Science periodicals has been proved many times in my experience. Whenever I have felt it difficult to reach a point of inspiration, the reading of these proofs of a perfect pattern underlying all real existence, raises thought to the singing stage. Then a lively zest for more spiritual knowledge replaces a sense of dullness and materiality.
Over twenty years ago we discarded the use of all medicines, disinfectants, salves, and so forth, and began the study of Christian Science. In our household of growing children, it has been proved to be the greatest blessing we have. Among our many proofs of its efficacy was a healing of complete paralysis of one side of the body. Another was of defective hearing, supposed to have been inherited. This was banished so completely that the child now has unusally keen hearing. A dog, which seemed to be mortally hurt after two wheels of a car passed over the middle part of his body, was as active as ever after two days of Christian Science treatment. The thought held at this time was that what seemed to mortal sense to be the dog was but the shadow of his real substance, and therefore the real dog could not be hurt any more than could his shadow if the car had run over it.
We have had several proofs that right thinking is the best dentist. I have had a hook-shaped tooth pulled out whole and with not the slightest sense of shock or pain and with almost no bleeding. This was in spite of fear on my part amounting to panic, and with no human means of dulling pain. A practitioner handled the case. One of the children had several crooked teeth. Shortly they began to come into line where they belonged, as I mentally replaced this sense of wrong development with meditation on the following passages from "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy (p. 423): "Bones have only the substance of thought which forms them;" and (p. 512), "From the infinite elements of the one Mind emanate all form, color, quality, and quantity, and these are mental, both primarily and secondarily." If substance and form are mental, they are perfect in their true sense. The true idea blots out the false, and this is the only healing needed.
My greatest and deepest gratitude is for the new rules for living that Christian Science has given me, and for some demonstration of them in my life. This demonstration has changed my experience from chronic frailty, nervousness, insomnia, indigestion, and weakness, to health and soundness, and given me the ability to carry heavy responsibilities quite easily and happily. Mrs. Eddy says (ibid., p. 272): "It is the spiritualization of thought and Christianization of daily life, in contrast with the results of the ghastly farce of material existence; it is chastity and purity, in contrast with the downward tendencies and earthward gravitation of sensualism and impurity, which really attest the divine origin and operation of Christian Science."
With my gratitude for all the means provided for this spiritualization of thought go my special thanks for the Wednesday evening testimony meetings and for the inspiring faithfulness and unselfishness of the Christian Science practitioners. In tracing our way back to the cause of this present-day salvation, we must pause humbly to acknowledge the marvelous achievement of Mrs. Eddy, whose gifts to us were made possible by the perfect work of the Wayshower, Christ Jesus. But none of these works would be ours to profit by, were it not for the great and glorious fact that God is good—and good is expressed.
(Mrs.) Dorothy G. Reed, Mound, Minnesota.
