Had "M. D." wished, he could have found the answer to...

Had "M. D." wished, he could have found the answer to his query in the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy.

In the first chapter of Genesis we read, "So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them." In the Christian Science textbook we read (p. 517): "The ideal woman corresponds to Life and to Love. In divine Science, we have not as much authority for considering God masculine, as we have for considering Him feminine, for Love imparts the clearest idea of Deity." And on page 332, "Father-Mother is the name for Deity, which indicates His tender relationship to His spiritual creation."

The teachings of Christian Science are based on the Bible, and the healing works which are accomplished are the result of the same Principle which guided Christ Jesus. Your correspondent infers that Christian Science is not Science. The word "science" comes from the Latin word scientia, which means "knowledge." Christian Science is the knowledge of spiritual truth.

Before one can put mathematics into practice, one needs to have a knowledge of its rules. It is essential to apply the rules correctly, and to work out each problem without regard for any human opinion. In like manner, in order to obtain right results in Christian Science, one must employ the same accuracy that is necessary in mathematics, then one finds it is simple and readily applied; in fact, children are daily proving its truths. Christian Science is scientific because it is susceptible of proof. Because "M. D." has not attempted to prove it, this does not entitle him to say it is all wrong, any more than a pupil who has not been able to prove a proposition in mathematics should say that mathematics is all wrong.

Many have proved, and are still proving, that Christian Science is demonstrable religion. It is awakening mankind to the necessity of making religion more practical. It is hard "to kick against the pricks." Science, heeding not the scoffs, marches forward; its progress is rapid, and its purpose is to free humanity from oppression and tyranny, from the bondage of sin, sorrow, and disease. That these glorious results are being accomplished in ever-increasing measure is evident to any fair-minded investigator. The healings witnessed to at the Wednesday evening meetings of the Christian Science church are a proof of this.
