My gratitude for Christian Science is unbounded
My gratitude for Christian Science is unbounded. For a period of seventeen years I have applied it to my experiences and have never found it wanting.
My theological viewa had been shattered, and I had become very much confused. I searched everywhere for an explanation of existence. I even doubted the miracles of Jesus. I realized that as a historical fact he had lived and evidently was a good man, but more I could not concede. However, I knew I was living. I had been created and was aware that creation was the outcome of some infinite source or intelligence. In moments of doubt I clung to these facts. Suddenly, during this period of unrest, copies of The Christian Science Journal and the Christian Science Sentinel were sent to me by a distribution committee of a branch church. Each article was eagerly read, and while not fully understanding everything, I was comforted, and my outlook on things changed from one of hopelessness to hope. I helped myself freely to literature from a box in a railroad station, until I was led to purchase Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy.
Our children were enrolled, while still very young, in the Sunday school, and soon my husband began to attend church with me. Both of us are now members of The Mother Church and of a branch church. During these years Christian Science has been our physician. The children have gone through periods of contagion untouched.
Just prior to my husband's acceptance of Christian Science, our son injured his knee. His father took him to a physician, who placed the knee in a cast and predicted many things. After two days my husband agreed to remove the cast and have Christian Science treatment. In less then six weeks all manifestation of the difficulty left. The boy has been able to participate in all the sports in which a normal boy usually indulges, although the doctor had declared this activity to be uncertain.
My husband was healed of inflammatory rheumatism and also of the tobacco habit. I was healed of chronic tonsillitis, which made its appearance every winter. Boils, brusises, and crushed fingers have been speedily cured. A condition diagnosed as rupture was healed. Antitoxin was administered for a condition of the throat which a doctor said was diphtheria. When the health department returned the report of the culture it was negative, and no quarantine was necessary. Although many conditions have had to be healed, as a whole our family has enjoyed a greater degree of health than other families of our acquaintance who rely upon other methods of healing.
During a year and a half of unemployment we were able to retain our home and meet our needs without incurring any debts. My daughter has been able to remain in college by working and through receiving several scholarships. During these experiences I have gained a more unshakable assurance that God is good, and with the Psalmist I too can say, "Happy is he that hath the God of Jacob for his help, whose hope is in the Lord his God."
My love and respect for our Leader, Mrs. Eddy, grow each day as I perceive the immensity of her work and what it means to the whole world. I am grateful for the progressive steps of membership in The Mother Church and in a branch church, also for class instruction.
