It has been my privilege for many years to enjoy some...
It has been my privilege for many years to enjoy some knowledge of the comfort and blessings brought to light through the study of Christian Science, as revealed in this age by our revered Leader, Mary Baker Eddy.
I was led to accept Christian Science largely through the influence of a small child, whose faith in God's ever-presence was beautiful to see. When anything disturbed her, she would declare, God is Love, and repeat this statement until she was free and happy again. At the age of three she contracted chicken pox. I offered to dress her, but was refused because I might see "error spots." She knew that healing was not aided by displaying error; and on the fol lowing day she was again free and the "error spots" had disappeared. She had something I wanted, so I took up the study of Christian Science in earnest.
When I had been reading Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy for a short while, the desire for smoking left me. Some two years later a friend whom I visited, persuaded me to join him in a smoke. During the visit I was free from any ill effects, but on the train to town I began to suffer pains, which increased in severity during the night. I worked mentally to the best of my understanding, and it suddenly came to me that I had knowingly yielded to temptation in smoking that cigar. I offered a prayer of gratitude that I saw the error of disobedience, and then I vomited and was free, sleeping soundly thereafter.
For the protection received in an experience I had three years ago I am especially grateful. A truck hit me, breaking both bones of the right leg below the knee. The smaller bone was badly shattered, the other split at the knee joint. The truck owner, being insured, offered to assist me to a surgeon's office; but on the way I asked him to go first to a certain Christian Science practitioner. The request caused astonishment, for his insurance company demanded surgical attention. He acquiesced, however. The treatment given was short, but effective, and I was conscious of complete freedom from pain and discomfort. This freedom was maintained, and I enjoy the same activity in that leg as before. The insurance company doubted that the bones were really broken, because it was very unusual for a man past middle age to make such quick recovery. Though I was required to keep the leg in a cast, it was discarded so quickly that the insurance company demanded an examination by a physician of their selection, who desired an X-ray picture. He was satisfied, and so reported to his company. It is interesting to note that the doctor who made the cast said the settings were perfect.
I am truly grateful for Christian Science and for the fine demonstrations I have witnessed, and I pray for an ever-increasing understanding of its doctrine.
August Brauns, Portland, Oregon.
