Over fifteen years ago, when all material aid had failed...
Over fifteen years ago, when all material aid had failed me, Christian Science came into my life through the interest of a friend.
I had suffered from varicose ulcers for twenty-two years, and had undergone operations on both legs. Great fear was expressed by the doctors in hospital that, owing to septic infection which had set in, the left leg would have to be removed. Also it was thought that I was passing on during, and again after, the administration of the anesthetic. When the time came for me to leave the hospital, the doctor said he was sorry to have to tell me that, after all I had undergone, my legs would never be of much use to me; I might as well have two wooden ones. This proved true, for it was not long before the ulcerated condition appeared again.
After years of suffering, I turned to Christian Science. My healing was very slow; but I am grateful now that through the experience, which seemed bitter at the time, I learned the necessity for great spiritual progress. I could not understand why the complete healing did not take place. One night when trying to do my mental work, I saw that I had been keeping letters from a practitioner, so that if the condition became acute again, I could refer to them. I was, in fact, expecting to have a recurrence of the condition. The instant I saw this error, I destroyed all the letters, and after that the healing was complete. This was over two years ago.
I am also most grateful for the fuller realization of God's loving care and protection which came to me recently when I was in great distress and in need of a home. I had been obliged to give up my post, and could not find a room. Later I found one for a week, and during that time I went to inquire for a friend who was very ill, and was told that there was a room in the house which I could have. Since then I have been told that the room is mine so long as I choose to live there.
Truly as our dear Leader says (Science and Health, p. 494), "Divine Love always has met and always will meet every human need." I am truly grateful for these experiences, because of the better understanding of the Bible they have given me.
I have had many beautiful healings in Christian Science, too numerous to mention here. I am grateful to God; to our dear Leader, Mary Baker Eddy; and to the practitioner who has so gently, lovingly, and wisely led me along the upward path, showing me the need to regenerate my thinking.—
