In the autumn of 1917, when in the Adirondack Mountains...
In the autumn of 1917, when in the Adirondack Mountains on a mission for the government, I was attacked by influenza. I was confined to a room in a hotel and a doctor was called. However, he was unable to visit me until about forty-four hours later.
Previous to that time I had attended the Christian Science church for a number of years, and through the healing of another member of my family I had become sufficiently interested to carry with me the Bible and a copy of the textbook, Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy. I read the textbook quite regularly and occasionally studied the Lesson-Sermons in the Christian Science Quarterly.
During the time I was waiting for the doctor, I read as much as I could from the textbook, trying to understand it and to get what help I could from it. I knew that it had helped others and felt that it would also help me. When the doctor arrived he said that the crisis was passed and I was out of danger. He prescribed no medicine, and I never saw him again. About a week later I resumed my work.
On page 393 of the textbook, Mrs. Eddy makes this statement: "Your body would suffer no more from tension or wounds than the trunk of a tree that you gash or the electric wire which you stretch, were it not for mortal mind." That statement had dwelt in my thought continually during the experience with influenza. A few days later I was able to prove it. I was using a large jackknife, which accidentally closed on my finger, gashing it badly. The statement from the textbook came to me immediately and I mentally repeated it. I put my glove on my hand and proceeded with my work. When I again looked at the finger, about an hour later, I found that it bled a drop and was almost healed. The next day the wound had disappeared.
A number of years later, while on my way home from work, I experienced a violent hemorrhage of the lungs. I was accompanied by a relative who is not a Christian Scientist, and who expressed a great deal of fear. I mentally did my work, declaring that I was being taken care of by God, the Great Physician. In a few minutes the flow of blood was temporarily checked. However, there was a recurrence again that night and in the forenoon, afternoon, and evening of the next day. It was then that a practitioner was called. The healing was quickly and permanently accomplished in one treatment.
Another healing I experienced was of a bad sore throat. It was so severe that I was unable to eat. I had written home stating that if I was not better by a certain day I should come home. The day preceding the one specified, I was no better. I retired without trying to eat; however, I fell asleep quickly and slept well. The next morning the soreness had entirely disappeared. That evening I received a letter from home, a part of which said, "As soon as I get the children to bed I will do some work for you." The healing was accomplished that night.
The protecting power of divine Love has saved me from danger and on several occasions has prevented what seemed to be certain disaster or destruction. Supply has been obtained when it seemed that every material source had been exhausted. During the years that I have been a student of Christian Science, chronic headache and cold sores, with which I had suffered since childhood, have almost entirely vanished without my knowing when. Fear and worry have been overcome.
For all of the blessings I have received through the study and application of Christian Science, I am deeply grateful.
