Christian Science Treatment

When we step into a dark room, holding up a very small light, even this small glow lightens the room; the darkness is not so deep as before. When we enter a dark room with a powerful lamp, this lightens the room even more. When we enter a dark room and bring with us a flood of light, the darkness is dispersed and dispelled.

The dark room illustrates human consciousness, darkened by fear, sin, and ignorance. The longing for release from these evils begins to open the door to freedom. If the longing is feeble, our receptivity is restricted. But as the longing becomes greater, the door of our thought opens wider and the light of spiritual illumination penetrates more and more. When this longing expands into an expectation of good which is free from doubt, our consciousness is flooded with spiritual light.

To the receptive thought, Christ, Truth, brings spiritual light. In Christian Science, Jesus is understood to be as Mrs. Eddy says, "the highest human corporeal concept of the divine idea, rebuking and destroying error and bringing to light man's immortality" (Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, p. 589). And Christ is understood to be "the divine manifestation of God, which comes to the flesh to destroy incarnate error" (ibid., p. 583). Christ Jesus said, "I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life." Through the Christ we gain the knowledge of the one perfect God and His perfect spiritual creation.

Christian Science, therefore, leads human thought out of the darkness of human beliefs into the light of spiritual understanding. It reveals man as the complete expression of the one perfect God. The understanding or scientific certainty that God, divine Love, our Father-Mother, blesses one and all, and that we cannot be deprived of this blessing, enables us to meet and destroy the errors of belief which present themselves. Under all conditions, "a Christian Scientist's medicine is Mind, the divine Truth that makes man free" (ibid., p. 453).

In Isaiah we read: "He will destroy in this mountain the face of the covering cast over all people, and the vail that is spread over all nations. He will swallow up death in victory." This covering, or "vail," is so-called mortal mind, and this concealing error is cleared away and withdrawn when we hold our consciousness to the light of Spirit, God. As we increase in spirituality, what is called mortal mind will finally fade into nothingness. Then will every limiting thought, even "the last enemy," be proved unreal and powerless. Paul said, "Then shall I know even as also I am known." The primal and eternal, the perfect God and His inviolable, perfect creation, will be seen as the only reality.

A Christian Science treatment destroys the false beliefs of mortal mind by the power of divine Mind and its ideas. When one in need asks for treatment, the healing truth which frees him is also of universal significance. Divine Love lifts the fear harbored consciously or unconsciously by the one calling for the help of Christian Science. We see from this that a Christian Science treatment has not the least resemblance to thought-transference; it reveals the very presence of God.
