Through the study of Christian Science happiness has come into my life under conditions which we are humanly educated to believe would make us miserable. This alone would fully justify all the time and effort which I could ever possibly devote to Christian Science; but we read in II Timothy, "All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness." Therefore I have also been blessed in many other ways.
Not more than one week's treatment was required to heal a very painful condition which a nurse, whose apartment we were renting, told me was neuritis. She added that I would never get rid of it, because the trouble was in the very nerve itself and could not be doctored, and assured me that a hot climate usually gave relief. She seemed somewhat interested in Christian Science, and I told her of a healing I had received just before meeting her. Upon questioning me about this difficulty, she stated that it was malaria and would always be in my system. However, this was in 1923, and after two or three days' treatment I was free and have never felt any return of the symptoms. As I was a student of Christian Science, a doctor was not consulted in either of these cases; but whatever the trouble might have been called, I was indeed grateful to be healed.
I was also healed in a short time of a condition which, owing to symptoms I had witnessed in the passing of a sister under the doctor's care, I felt bordered on pneumonia, The false testimony of the physical senses was in evidence, but I was able to carry on with my duties until I was free.
I have had several instantaneous healings, including one of ptomaine poisoning. After one treatment I immediately became normal, ate my dinner, and that was the end of the trouble. Another instantaneous healing was of a feeling that my body was benumbed. This was accompanied by a great sense of fear and I asked my husband to telephone to a practitioner. She said she would help me immediately and asked me to read the first paragraph on page 162 of Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy. While I was reading, I could feel a change taking place in my body, and by the time I had finished the paragraph I felt normal.
I am especially grateful for "the scientific statement of being" on page 468 of Science and Health. I know that this is applicable to any phase of error, but in my case I have been quickly freed from pain occasioned by severe burns by keeping my thought filled with this wonderful statement. In this connection, I was impressed with the command in II Timothy, "Be instant in season, out of season." In one instance, when my arm had touched a hot mangle, I declared "the scientific statement of being," and in a very few moments I was free from pain. In another instance, when I accidentally poured boiling water on my hand while arranging dishes in a drainer, I instantly declared this statement, giving the error no opportunity to register in consciousness, and I felt no pain whatsoever.
I am very grateful for the beautiful manner in which I was cared for in an automobile accident over four years ago. At first, I was at a loss to understand why this experience had come to me, but I have since realized that resentment, entertained at the time the trip was taken, opened the door wide to any error which might claim to come my way; also I was coasting along on previous effort, thinking I would resume my daily study of the Lesson-Sermon in the Christian Science Quarterly on my return home. I was seriously injured, but my husband wired a practitioner and in three days, by the time our car was repaired, I was able to continue our journey. For some time there was a lump on the back of my neck, and my head tended to lean forward, but through the loving efforts of a practitioner this was overcome. There is now no visible evidence of the experience.
It would be impossible for me to tell, in a testimony, the numerous blessings which Christian Science has brought to me. We have been so uplifted and encouraged through the seeming depression, living conditions have been improved, and we are beginning to realize that God has indeed given us the kingdom. Jesus said, "Fear not, little flock; for it is your Father's good pleasure to give you the kingdom," and Christian Science teaches us how to claim our inheritance.
Words fail to express my gratitude to God for Jesus, for Mary Baker Eddy, for the Christian Science periodicals, and for our practitioners, class instruction, and membership in The Mother Church and a branch church, where the blessed privilege to serve our Cause has meant spiritual growth that I could not have acquired in any other way. I am also grateful for our lectures and for every activity of the Christian Science movement.
(Mrs.) Lulu A. Reid, Alameda, California.
