During many years' study of Christian Science I have...
During many years' study of Christian Science I have experienced a great change in my home, greater security and peace, and an ever-increasing appreciation of Mrs. Eddy's great work. I did not turn to Christian Science for physical healing, although later many healings were received through the understanding and application of this truth. At first I believed that this religion would satisfy a deep hungering for spiritual things, and also help to free me from that from which I suffered mentally—sensitiveness, a morbid tendency, and moodiness. I would seemingly drop from the heights of joy to heaviest darkness and brooding. The healing from these unhappy traits was gradual; but from the first I found comfort and joy in the realization that "happiness is spiritual, born of Truth and Love" (Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy, p. 57); that it comes from God alone, and that it is changeless, permanent, and eternal.
The first physical healing I had was that of chronic throat and tonsil trouble, the latter appearing every winter. This condition was eliminated entirely through my daily study of Christian Science. While still a beginner in my study I was one day beset with a severe headache. I closed my eyes and tried to recall some of the truths I had learned, and to realize something of God's presence, of His enveloping love and tender care for His own. So conscious was I of God's nearness that the pain disappeared, and I was free at once.
Some time later an eye weakness, accompanied by semiblindness began to trouble me. I sought to relieve the condition by resting and sleeping, but the trouble only grew worse. Up to this time I had been a reader of fiction and of all that I could find to peruse. Suddenly I realized that I had come to the crossroads, where I must give my whole heart to God, to make Him first in my life and all else secondary. I also realized that hitherto I had been concerned most with what I could get through Christian Science, and not so much with what I could give. With this sudden illumination of thought, together with prayer and greatest humility, I was freed from the eye trouble instantaneously. The dimness faded from before my eyes and I saw normally. Following this experience I had a desire to be active in the Christian Science movement and began taking the steps necessary to becoming a member of a branch church.
My children were healed of various diseases, among them scarlet fever, mastoiditis, blood poisoning, and colds. With the attack of scarlet fever I sat by my son's bedside for hours, until I knew that the difficulty was destroyed. The next morning he rose a well boy, joyous, animated, and free.
With the many trials and complexities continually arising in our home I realized the need for such increased understanding which would enable me not only fearlessly to meet and master whatever problems came, but also for such strength and illumination of thought as would prevent much of the discord. Consequently, I began to prepare for the next and higher step in progress—that of class instruction. With this step came a great flood of light in my experience and a deeper and ever more humble desire to press forward.
The daily, unfolding good in my life, the quiet, inner peace, the understanding of God's nearness, endear Christian Science to me.
