Dorset County Chronicle

In your recent issue appeared a letter which contained erroneous statements about Christian Science and its Discoverer and Foundr, Mary Baker Eddy, and I shall be glad if you will kindly allow space for this reply.

Your correspondent is incorrect in stating that Mrs. Eddy "was not actually the discoverer of Christian Science." Through searching the Scriptures she found the spiritual law by which Christ Jesus healed the sick, saved sinners, stilled the tempest, and raised the dead. In her textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," Mrs. Eddy writes (p. 109), "I wom my way to absolute conclusions through divine revelation, reason, and demonstration." Also, on page 126 of the same book she states: "The Bible has been my only authority. I have had no other guide in 'the straight and narrow way' of Truth."

Mrs. Eddy was a gentle New England woman, deeply religious and spiritually minded. That she was well read and highly educated is fully apprectiated by those who are acquainted with her writings.

Christian Science is the restatement of primitive Christianity, the Christianity which Christ Jesus taught and practiced, and he left this promise, "He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also." Christian Scientists are proving their Master's teachings to the extent that they understand them, and are willing to be judged by their fruits. Christian Science is bringing to the sick release from suffering, and giving to those who are ready to accept its teachings a wider outlook on life, and a greater sense of happiness and freedom.

It is not possible within the space available to reply to all the statements contained in your correspondent's letter. As, however, he has "no wish to be unkind in any critical remarks" he may make, I feel sure that he wishes to be fair.

To gain an accurate knowledge of any subject necessitates the study of a textbook of that particular subject. I therefore recommend your correspondent to read the Christian Science textbook, already mentioned, with an open, unbiased mind; also Dr. Lyman Powell's biography of Mrs. Eddy, entitled, "Mary Baker Eddy: A Life Size Portrait." These books may be borrowed free of charge from the Christian Science Reading Room and the public libraries.

Let the man in the thick of things remember that the spirit of thanksgiving affects our bodies, and so our strength, and so our attack of the next battle or problem, and so our victory. Thanksgiving of heart gives a fine freshness, a tingle, a tang to one's spirit that not only assures but increases victory.—S. D. Gordon.
