The day before I had class instruction in Christian Science...
The day before I had class instruction in Christian Science, an event that was to change the entire course of my life, I felt very miserable. I picked up a copy of The Christian Science Journal in a hotel lobby and turning to the testimonies read every one. As I read, my thought overflowed with a deep sense of gratitude for the healing of others, and when I came to myself, I found I had been completely healed. It is my hope that this testimony may similarly help others in their search for healing.
Christian Science first came to my attention through my sister's healing of pain and weakness of many years' standing. I had been suffering from a distressing chronic difficulty which physicians had failed to diagnose or cure, but it was not until a business friend spoke to me of his healing through Christian Science that I was awakened to the point of seeking help for myself. The practitioner to whom I went asked me to buy the Christian Science textbook and read it. After studying intermittently for about two years I went to another practitioner, and with her loving assistance I was healed of the difficulty.
My wife had also taken up the study, and we sent our children to the Christian Science Sunday School. When our youngest son was born my wife had pneumonia, and her complete healing at this time was accomplished through the consecrated help of a practitioner, although the attending physician gave us very little hope.
It was fully nine years after the purchase of our first copy of Science and Health that we joined a branch church. The decision to express my gratitude by joining The Mother Church and accepting some active service in the branch church did not come until I had passed through a severe trial. During this period I was forced to learn how to study Christian Science more earnestly and consistently than I had dreamed possible. My wife passed on, and in overcoming a sense of loss and separation I learned the most important lesson of my life. I found that I could always rise out of a sense of depression by studying the Bible, Mrs. Eddy's writings, or the Christian Science periodicals. I carried one of our Leader's writings in my pocket always and found the time and place to read at least a sentence or two nearly every waking hour. In addition I read the whole Lesson-Sermon in the Christian Science Quarterly every day, attended all the lectures I could, and never missed a church service.
For fifteen years prior to this experience I had been employed as a salesman of advertising space. This particular year all the gain for our business came out of my territory; in fact, my gain was so large that it offset a loss in every other territory in the West for that years, and the whole business gained. In overcoming the belief of loss and separation, I had proved a sense of life and right activity, which was manifested in my business experience. The following year I was made sales manager of the business at a greatly increased income. Also during the next year my home situation was beautifully worked out. After seven successful years in business I resigned in order to be of further service to the great Cause of Christian Science.
I do not feel that I have had a troubled life in any sense of the word, but I have learned, and am learning more each day, the blessed privilege of having access to the textbooks of Christian Science. I say with all sincerity and conviction to anyone, no matter how great or small discordant situations seem to be: Find a way to study more our great Leader's invaluable writings, and, no matter what the condition, you can bring the harmonious, happy, divine plan into your present daily affairs. In "Miscellaneous Writings" we have these words from Mrs. Eddy (p. 252): "Mental medicine gains no potency by attenuation, and its largest dose is never dangerous, but the more the better in every case."
Will B. Davis, Wilmette, Illinois.
As the sister mentioned, I wish to corroborate the foregoing testimony. The healings spoken of by my brother have been a revelation to us all. The overcoming of a sense of grief and loss was a very definite proof that, as Mrs. Eddy says on page 574 of Science and Health, "The very circumstance, which your suffering sense deems wrathful and afflictive, Love can make an angel entertained unawares."
For many years I had been under the care of physicians, and in spite of all that they could do I was never really well. When Christian Science was presented to us it came as a last resort; and it brought me complete healing, changing my life from one of semi-invalidism to one of unusual activity and freedom. Innumerable healings have taken place in our family since that time, and we are being guided and protected in countless ways.
I am deeply grateful for the physical help that a study of Christian Science has brought, but even more so that I am learning to see a little more clearly the oneness of God and His manifestation, man.
