I first became interested in Christian Science when my husband was declared by his doctors to be tubercular. His sister offered him "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, and asked him to read it. He did not read it, but I did, and I have been so grateful ever since that I found this great truth. I soon purchased a textbook of my own, and during the eighteen years since then we have had many healings in our home, and I have found that Christian Science meets all human needs.
One day I received a message that my eldest daughter had been in an automobile accident, and that I must come at once to a home several miles distant and bring a doctor. As my husband was out of town with our car, I asked the doctor if I could ride with him. While waiting for him I called a Christian Science practitioner in a neighboring town, and she said: "There are no accidents in God's kingdom. Your daughter is a perfect idea right now and ever." I shall never cease to be grateful for the feeling of assurance and peace that came to me and stayed with me through that night.
On our arrival we found that the car had been completely demolished, quite a large crowd had gathered, and doctors and an ambulance had been sent for. The doctor informed others that the girl had a basal fracture and would not live to be moved. He had known me from childhood, and knew that I was a student of Christian Science, and as we stood beside the girl he did not offer to say anything to me. When I asked him if he thought any bones were broken, he answered: "She will never suffer from broken bones. She has a basal fracture and there is nothing that medical science can do." The ambulance arrived soon, and we took her to the same town where the practitioner lived. She had been moaning constantly, but about halfway to our destination she stopped, and the attendant examined her, thinking she had passed on. She was breathing quietly and was completely healed of the skull fracture before she reached the hospital, where they took many X rays, trying to find the fracture.
The doctors told us that she had a severe concussion and also four fractured ribs, and they would give us no hope of her recovery. She remained there two weeks. I regretted that it seemed impossible to take her home, but they were unwilling to release her in that condition. During this time mortal mind presented the evidence of blindness, paralysis, and insanity. I left her on Wednesday evening and attended the testimony meeting at the Christian Science church. I arrived early and was reading over some of the hymns, when the message came to me very clearly, "God does not give you half a loaf," and I realized that divine Mind would not offer half a healing—that my daughter was already perfect. I returned to the hospital, and against their protests informed them that I was taking my daughter home the next day. However, they would not release her till the Friday before Christmas. The doctors told us that her mind was a blank as to the past, that she must not walk for six weeks, and that her bowel motion was paralyzed from the narcotics given her and would have to be carefully watched. The practitioner came Friday evening and had a long talk with her. After the practitioner left, my daughter talked to me about Christmas, told me how long she had been away, and gave me a list of friends whom she wished to be remembered, not forgetting one. She even addressed two cards herself. On Monday she walked to the table and ate Christmas dinner. She was completely healed. The bowel movement was normal from the time we reached home. I cannot express the joy of watching her respond to Truth.
The head doctor at the hospital recognized the healing. The doctor who had gone with me was amazed when the X rays showed no skull fracture, and said that all the X rays in the country could not convince him that the skull had not been smashed. He said there had been no evidence of heart beat at all, and that he had never seen a person brought back from the grave as she had been. Words fail to express my gratitude for this healing. I only pray that I may so live as to prove my gratitude.
I am grateful to Mrs. Eddy for having given us this wonderful truth, and for the loving and patient help of the practitioner during those two weeks, when she was so patient and so ready to help at any time I called.
