In order to gain a true perception of Christian Science it is of great importance, if not indeed an essential requirement, that we shall first get to know something about the Discoverer and Founder of this religion—Mary Baker Eddy.

She was a woman of education and culture, a thinker and, as her life proved, a doer. From childhood an earnest student of the Scriptures, she had a deep conviction of the power of prayer. It was not, however, until the year 1866, when Mrs. Eddy was in her forty-fifth year, that her earlier activities and efforts to find a mental cause for all physical effects began to mature, and what she terms "the Great Discovery" (Retrospection and Introspection, p. 24) came about.

Christian Science has been described as giving a demonstrable understanding of the fact that God is omnipotent, omnipresent, and omniscient. Most of us have been taught to believe that God is all-powerful, but how many of us do sincerely accept that fact? How many of us believe, or understand, that God is ever present and all-knowing? Christian Science enables us to gain a better understanding of God and of our relation to Him; it illumines thought and enables men to perceive the spiritual meaning of the Scriptures, and reveals the "recipe for all healing" which, Mrs. Eddy states in Science and Health (p. 406), is contained in the Bible. It explains in a most wonderful way the life and works of our Master, Christ Jesus; and enjoins upon all its followers the paramount necessity of following faithfully in his footsteps.

Christian Science teaches that matter is not the reality of existence, but is merely the objective state of human thinking, and that true substance is Spirit. This may seem rather startling to those of us who are still content to believe the testimony of the physical senses; but it is not difficult to convince even the most skeptical person by the illustration of optical illusions that at least one of his physical senses is entirely unreliable. It is upon reason and revelation, then, that we must depend to be shown true being. Christian Science accepts Spirit as the only true substance because God is Spirit, and, as the Bible states, "all things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made." Again, there is the Bible text, "The things which are seen are temporal; but the things which are not seen are eternal."
