I have been attending a Christian Science Society for only...
I have been attending a Christian Science Society for only a short time, but it has entirely altered my outlook on life. I was confined to my bed with acute rheumatism, unable to lift my arms or move one leg at all, and suffered agonies of pain every time I was moved. I tried scores of remedies, but all to no avail. One day an acquaintance asked me to try Christian Science. I knew absolutely nothing of this Science, but out of admiration for her courage and in pure courtesy I agreed to do so. She kindly lent me some printed lectures and other Christian Science literature, and after some time I began to read it. I had not read far before I realized with something of a shock that Christian Science was just what I had been longing for; and then and there I determined to know more about it.
With great difficulty I attended my first testimony meeting; and the next day, with many qualms, I managed to get as far as the Reading Room and spoke to the lady in charge, telling her I had lost not only my health, but God as well. She listened quietly with true sympathy, and then said: "I quite understand; let us lend you Mrs. Eddy's book. Read the first chapter and see how you get on." Well, I took that blessed book home and did as she had said. I devoured its contents, forgetting all aches and pains in the joy of reading. Quite suddenly I knew clearly that there was nothing to fear. So certain was I that I actually cried aloud, "There's nothing to fear," and the burden of that fear fell away from me like a heavy blanket.
I had been one of the world's worst worriers in my day. Some years ago I lost a little lad, who was run over and killed. That caused me untold suffering and worry, so that if my other children were a few minutes late in coming home from school or office, I was rushing about looking for them like one demented. Now they are far from me in their own homes, and Christian Science has taught me to leave them with divine Love, in whose care I know they are safe. I have now learned to be calm under all circumstances, trusting everything to our Father-Mother God.
I am most grateful for the way our beloved Leader presents God to us. She tells us that "He fills all space" (Science and Health, p. 331), and that we can never be separated from Him. To me that is a revelation indeed! Through the beautiful readings of the Lesson-Sermons from the Christian Science Quarterly in the church here I have been led again to explore the Bible, wherein I find solace for all perplexities. I am more than grateful for the help of the practitioner, whose loving words seemed to fit my case at once, and most of all for the wonderful healing of thought and body. The kindly smiles and encouraging words I have received—a stranger in this community—have made the little church a haven of joy and peace. I am indeed grateful that I was led by the guidance of God to study Christian Science.—(Mrs.) Elizabeth Gaymer, Leigh-on-Sea, Essex, England.
