Extracts from Reports of Christian Science Committees on Publication

France.

Christian Science was mentioned directly twenty-seven times in different publications during the past five months. A reply was made to each mention and addressed either to the editor of the paper or to the writer of the article. In addition, a translation of each excerpt and the reply was made and sent to Boston, with a copy of the original in French. Few of the articles showed much evidence of opposition to Christian Science.

Excelsior, an important Paris daily that always gives some quotation on the front page, took the principal thought, in one issue, from "What Our Leader Says," found in Mrs. Eddy's book, Miscellany (p. 210), Also the Journal of Fougeres in Normandy published the same. A letter of thanks was sent to the editors of each of these papers. In another magazine there appeared an article on the subject of youth in which were mentioned some of the great works accomplished by Mrs. Eddy in her advanced years, giving her as the most striking example of "perpetual youth."

Frequent mention of The Christian Science Monitor is found in the French press. These frequent allusions here to the Monitor confirm the missionary value of our paper in France. One editor of an important publication in France expressed the most specific appreciation for what Christian Science is doing in France and in the world in general to bring out that truly international spirit which is so necessary today. At the request of the Committee the Board of Directors of The Mother Church are having prepared several definitions of "Christian Science" to be inserted in the new editions of Larousse dictionaries. A few biographical notes to accompany Mrs. Eddy's name will also be prepared.

Puerto Rico.

The translation into Spanish of a lecture was given to the society in San Juan by the Board of Directors of The Mother Church, through the Department of Translations of The Christian Science Publishing Society. It was published in El Mundo the day after the lecturer delivered it in English. Approximately five hundred copies were sold to other Spanish-speaking fields for their distribution work.

On May 5 an article appeared in El Imparcial relative to a group of people performing physical healing through means other than medicine. An interview was obtained with the writer. He was very courteous, listened with keen interest to a few remarks about our Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, also to a short statement of where Christian Science services are held, and accepted a reply to the article, which was published in Spanish.

From June 22 to July 9 a Monitor exhibit was held at the Agricultural and Industrial Fair of Puerto Rico. All members of the local society were given an opportunity to serve in the Monitor booth. The excellent co-operation was very gratifying. Approximately two hundred copies of the Monitor were distributed to interested persons. More could have been used, had our supply been greater. Considerable interest was shown in the posters made from clippings of special features taken from the Monitor. Quite a bit of attention was attracted by the entire paper being tacked in a conspicuous place, each day showing a different page. A few short-term subscriptions for the Monitor were taken. Several very attractive posters were received from the Circulation Manager of The Christian Science Publishing Society, which added to the attractiveness of the booth and gave color.
