I am more thankful than I can say for my awakening...

I am more thankful than I can say for my awakening to Christian Science, for all the healings, physical and moral, which have followed, and for those witnessed. Some of these mortal dreams are indeed in the nature of nightmares of illness, lack, and inharmony.

I should like to tell of a quick and complete healing of lumbago, a complaint to which I was very subject. I awoke one morning unable to move, held as it were in a vise by acute pains extending all over my body. When Science and Health was put into my hands I read for about twenty minutes, and at the end of that time I arose and dressed, entirely free, with not a vestige of the pain remaining.

Some years ago I was also subject to a painful affliction of the jaw. The trouble would yield somewhat to mental work and then would get worse again, so that at times I could scarcely open my mouth. My daughter, then a pupil in the Christian Science Sunday School, did faithful mental work for me one night. When I went into her room the next morning I put my hand to my face with an exclamation of pain, and she said, "I was positive I had seen the truth about it and you as God's perfect idea expressing perfection." I replied, "Then it is healed, for we cannot take, or use, the name of the Lord in vain." With these words the condition instantly disappeared and has never returned.

A healing of wrong conditions comes vividly to mind. One winter two peach trees in our garden, being badly affected with blight, were sprayed with insecticide by the gardener. When spring came, these trees, instead of budding and blossoming, were black with blight. One summer's day, a month or so later, my daughter drew my attention to the trees and asked what could be done. "All we can do is to know the truth," I replied. "We must know that this is no part of God's creation, which He pronounced good." We thereupon agreed to know only the truth of God's creation. A few days later my daughter called me to see the trees, which were indeed a sight. They were covered with buds and tiny fresh green leaves. There was not a trace of the blight to be seen, and that season we had a record crop of beautiful, large peaches. This experience was quite awe-inspiring.

I recall one occasion, in the early days of my study, when I seemed to lose myself in a maze of materiality, and, being unable to find my way out, fell into a state of despondency and doubt, when Peter's words came to me, "Lord, to whom shall we go? thou hast the words of eternal life." This experience healed me permanently of all doubt as to the absolute all-power of Christian Science.

My heart goes out in gratitude and love to God for our loved Way-shower, and to our dear Leader for giving us, besides her marvelous textbook, so many channels for progress, including class instruction. For membership in The Mother Church and a branch church I am sincerely grateful.
