The Lectures

Introductions to Lectures

West Roxbury, Massachusetts (auspices The Mother Church).

Lecturer: Charles V. Winn; introduced by William Roland Holland, who said:—

It is recounted in the book of II Kings that Elisha, the prophet, was besieged in the city of Dothan by the army of the enemy. Elisha's servant, beholding the host of horses and chariots surrounding the city, cried out in despair, "Alas, my master! how shall we do?" The prophet, because of his spiritual understanding of God's omnipresence, was able to give this comforting assurance: "Fear not: for they that be with us are more than they that be with them."

To all who seem compassed about by the hosts of evil—sin, sickness, lack, and discouragement—Christian Science is saying today: Fear not. God, good, is ever present, and greater than any seeming power of evil.

Medicine Hat, Alberta, Canada (Second Church).

Lecturer: Rev. Irving C. Tomlinson; introduced by Mrs. Helen Marion Marsh, who said:—

Mrs. Eddy writes in Science and Health (p. 313): "Jesus of Nazareth was the most scientific man that ever trod the globe. He plunged beneath the material surface of things, and found the spiritual cause." It was Jesus' understanding of spiritual cause, and the great love he had for humanity, that enabled him to heal the sick and the sinning, and to triumph over death. In his marvelous works he was glorifying God. In our day Christian Science is plunging "beneath the material surface of things," and revealing the spiritual. And we know this to be true, for multitudes turning to Christian Science in their various difficulties are finding that the same love and power which were present with Jesus to heal and bless, are present today, healing, blessing, and satisfying them as nothing else can do.
