The Lectures
Introductions to Lectures
Vancouver, Washington (First Church).
Lecturer: William Duncan Kilpatrick; introduced by Mrs. Elizabeth Gillott, who said:—
When the Master was about to leave his disciples, he comforted them with these words: "In the world ye shall have tribulation; but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world." Christian Science is bringing the everlasting cheer of this message by leading the world's thought away from the changes and limitations of a material sense of life and the universe to the stability of infinite good, to God, manifesting Himself through His idea, man. It is healing the sick and uplifting the sorrowful.
Many years ago I first experienced the benefits of Christian Science in overcoming what are regarded as nervous disorders; and later, without material help of any kind, I was healed of heart disease and toxic goiter, after two medical specialists had said that only an operation might save my life. This healing was slow but complete, and since that time I have enjoyed unusually good health.
Sydney, New South Wales, Australia (Second Church).
Lecturer: Miss Margaret Murney Glenn; introduced by Captain Michael James Lowe, who said:—
The question has frequently been asked, "Does Christian Science heal the sick?" My answer to that question is, "Yes, it does as certainly as it did over nineteen hundred years ago." I stand here this evening as a witness to the healing power of Christian Science.
Before I began the study of this Science I was a very sick man indeed, suffering from war effects, both physical and mental. I spent some months in a hospital in which I received all the care and attention it was possible for a patient to receive from devoted nurses and doctors alike. I cannot express my appreciation of their services. However, I did not respond to their treatment, and left the hospital a physical wreck, with no prospect for the future but that of being a confirmed invalid. It was whilst in this state that Christian Science was introduced to me by a friend at whose home I was spending a week-end holiday, with the result that on the following Sunday I attended a Christian Science service for the first time. I shall never forget that service and all that it means to myself and my family now.
On my return home the following Tuesday, I was reading in an article in the Christian Science Sentinel of the healing of a case similar to my own, and whilst reading was instantaneously healed of all my troubles. This came as a great joy not only to myself but to my family, who, I am pleased to say, are now all students of Christian Science. I then began to study Mrs. Eddy's textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," and some time later all desire for either smoking or drinking left me without any effort whatever on my part.
Friends, Christian Science has healed me, and it can and will heal you and all who are ready and willing to accept its teachings and to practice its truths.
Pacific Beach, California (Society).
Lecturer: Professor Hermann S. Hering; introduced by Mrs. Anna K. Clark, who said:—
In this age of demonstration there has never been a greater demand for results. Never have mortals been less satisfied with promises. The tendency is to judge everything by what is accomplished. Those of us who have studied Christian Science have come to know that there can be but one basis for thought and demonstration, that is God, the divine Principle of all being. This Principle, understood and correctly applied, will solve all our problems.
For several years I have enjoyed the blessings which have resulted from the study of Christian Science: better health, higher ideals, and real joy and happiness.
Lorain, Ohio (First Church).
Lecturer: Paul A. Harsch; introduced by William W. Inman, who said:—
About thirteen years ago, when I knew little about Christian Science, I found that I was much in need of healing; and when a practitioner was asked for help it was very lovingly given. The disease, which was skin cancer of the most dreaded type, was soon healed with no trace of it remaining, for which I am truly grateful.
