Christian Science Healing

A Christian Science healing is an unsurpassed experience. Often it at once results in a freedom so complete that what seemed inharmony now is remembered only as a dream or is happily forgotten. In other words, man's divine right of freedom is glimpsed, and for a time at least thought rests in the sunshine of harmonious reality. At this time the actuality of man's perfection may be clearer to the awakened thought. The experience brings with it a feeling of happy exaltation, a holy joy, which many witness to as "the peace of God, which passeth all understanding." A Christian Science treatment brings blessedness. James writes, "The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much." The affirming and reaffirming of the truth cannot fail to correct mortal mind's erroneous conclusions, and to make harmonious spiritual facts clearer to human consciousness, so giving it new hope and peace.

When awakened from an unpleasant dream, the individual is naturally happy to find that the experience was not real, and soon forgetting the dream he enjoys his freedom, no longer believing himself unhappy, sick, or terrified. What is it that awakens him to realize his freedom in the place of fear? In "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 494) Mary Baker writes, "Reason, rightly directed, serves to correct the error of corporeal sense; but sin, sickness, and death will seem real (even as the experiences of the sleeping dream seem real) until the Science of man's eternal harmony breaks their illusion with the unbroken reality of scientific being."

Science or enlightenment breaks the illusion or dream. The truth about a situation does away with error. "Reason, rightly directed" through Science tells the sufferer that his suffering has no foundation in Truth, for God, who is Truth, made all good; therefore, there is naught else. This right reasoning corrects "the errors of corporeal sense" that claim there is another creation, another man, an imperfect one, subject to all sorts of ills and misfortunes, and finally to death. True being is governed by God alone, and this God-given knowledge dispels the dream of more than one power.

Healing in Christian Science should be quick and permanent, and thousands are joyfully testifying to quick and permanent healings of disease and inharmony; and these witnesses increase in numbers as others in need find that God heals disease when sought aright. Sometimes one hears gratitude expressed for what is termed a "slow" healing. Christian Scientists do and should expect a speedy manifestation of normal health; yet in the midst of seeming delays they have often "entertained angels unawares," as everything in their experience is made to glorify God and used as a further step toward understanding Him better. Trials sometimes compel true growth in solving problems, and as these problems are worked out one by one through the power of God, new cause for gratitude is found in the joy that comes with each victory. If we are seemingly struggling with a problem of healing sickness, sin, or other inharmony, we can know that, if praying aright, we shall soon awake to find that our work is increasing our understanding of God and of man's relationship to Him. Working prayerfully for this understanding will help to banish from our experience—never to return—the illusion or dream of sickness, for omnipotent Truth cannot be reversed. Even if mortal mind says thus and so, this does not make its claims true, for it has nothing to say about real Life. God is the only Mind. He governs; His word is law, the law of good. Mortal mind is the deceiver, and has no power, no intelligence, no entity, These belong to Love alone, and are reflected by man, God's idea, His beloved son.

On page 450 of the Christian Science textbook our Leader says, "The Christian Scientist has enlisted to lessen evil, disease, and death; and he will overcome them by understanding their nothingness and the allness of God, or good." Those thus "enlisted," whose names are registered in The Christian Science Journal, are devoting their time to the healing and comforting work. These growing enlistments should greatly hearten and cheer a world grown weary of its seeking in materiality to find health, happiness, supply, for Christian Science practitioners are daily turning the seeker to the one path that leads to the truth about God and man.

Christian Science is the one natural and efficacious panacea. It is the same system employed and preached by Christ Jesus, the spiritual Science which "brings to the body the sunlight of Truth, which invigorates and purifies" (Science and Health, p. 162). This truth is all that is needed for invigoration and purification, because it declares God aright.
