[Original testimony in German]
With a heart filled with gratitude I wish to testify to a wonderful healing received through Christian Science.
In May, 1928, I was taken suddenly ill. I was attacked with fever and severe pains in my body. The doctor who was called immediately diagnosed spasms of the stomach. The next time he called he said that it was inflammation of the appendix, or appendicitis. I could not be operated upon, as I was also suffering from a complete nervous breakdown. When I left my bed a few weeks later I had lost thirty pounds. My condition was desperate. I could not work and could hardly walk because of weakness. The doctor sent me to a hospital in another town. There I was X-rayed and the usual examinations were made. A few days later the doctor said I could go home at once and my family doctor would tell me the details. He further told me that I had only short time to live. To calm me temporarily he sent me to a watering place. There, too, the doctors replied to my questions merely with a shrug of the shoulders. I was again attacked with appendicitis while there and asked to be operated on, but was told that I could not live through an operation. When the pain had somewhat abated, I went home with less hope than ever.
During my three years' sickness I was able to partake of only very light nourishment, and even this caused pains in my stomach and continual discomfort; and my life was made so miserable that I decided to end it.
A Christian Scientist who with her relatives had long observed my condition told me about Christian Science. She gave me a copy of the Herald, and once, during one of the frequent attacks, when I was reading the testimonies of healing a wonderful peace came over me, and I decided to study this teaching. Hoping that God would help me, I went to see a practitioner. She took a loving interest in me and began to work for me. From that time my condition began to improve noticeably, and in two weeks I was free from this complaint which none of the doctors I had consulted could either heal or relieve. I was able to work, and to eat what I wanted, and in a few months regained my former weight.
I am sincerely grateful to our Father-Mother God for His boundless goodness and love; to our revered Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, for this beneficent teaching she has left for mankind; and to the practitioner who has helped me to learn more of the teachings of Christian Science.—Paul Arthur Rasch, Reichenbach, Vogtland, Germany.
