Unfolding Acquaintance with God

Today , as never before, humanity is learning the value of right thinking, and is finding out that the Science of true healing, as Jesus taught it, is an ever present possibility. In the light of spiritual truth we realize that spiritual sense lifts thought into the realm of eternal Truth where man is found at one with the Father—in a permanent state of unity with God.

The transformation of thought from a material to a spiritual basis is the purpose of Christian Science, and is the natural effect of unfolding acquaintance with God. Christian Science recognizes but one Mind, infinite, eternal, omnipresent, filling all space.

The student of Christian Science advances in the degree that his spirituality increases, being enabled thereby to keep his thought more steadfastly occupied with what is real—the truth concerning God and man.

God is infinite, immeasurable good, and He abundantly supplies His creation with that good for its continuous and harmonious being. The knowledge of the omnipresence of Spirit displaces all belief in another presence or substance, and assures the continuity of eternal good for man. Man thus lives within Spirit's resources, being actively and eternally sustained and replenished by the omniaction of the eternal Mind, God.

Let us lift ourselves out of the belief of limitation into the consciousness of infinite good, for in the attaining of this consciousness is to be found the solution to the problem of human limitation. Spiritual understanding is most vital to us; and as we think on the things of God, that is, express the ideas of divine Mind, we cannot fail to be conscious of man's unity with the plenitude of the divine nature.

We are living in an age of great progress. The discovery and utilization of modern inventions have broken down many of the beliefs of constricted boundaries. The people of the world have accordingly become more than ever neighbors whose voices can speed over vast stretches of land and sea.

The human mind is thus losing some of its shackles, enabling mankind to have a broader outlook. True progress, however, is indicated by spiritual advancement toward a more complete understanding of God and man, for without this knowledge we must still be limited and bound by material beliefs which retard our spiritual growth.

As we look back over human history, we see how largely the peoples of the world have been walled in by the narrow outlook of the human so-called mind, with little interest beyond their local affairs, living behind walls of prejudice, intolerance, and ignorance. The larger understanding of God and of man's relation to Him, which Christian Science has brought to us, has given us access to broader realms of thought and brought to us the understanding that limitation in whatsoever form presented is but a lying argument of mortal mind, thus turning us in the direction of spiritual freedom.

Our Leader writes (Miscellaneous Writings, p. 232): "This age is reaching out towards the perfect Principle of things; is pushing towards perfection in art, invention, and manufacture. Why, then, should religion be stereotyped, and we not obtain a more perfect and practical Christianity?" Through Christian Science she has established the demonstrable fact that God is infinite good, unlimited intelligence, and that man is His image and likeness.

This clear concept of God as divine Principle and of man as God's reflection reveals to us that all action is mental. To reflect right activity continually by knowing there is but one Mind, one divine, supreme intelligence, which is always supplying man, the perfect idea of God, with all he needs, is to fill each moment with genuine service. Since God, Spirit, is infinite, All-in-all, man's origin is wholly spiritual; and Love, which is all-powerful and all-governing and is reflected by man, should fill our consciousness and be actively expressed in our every thought and our every relationship.

Writing in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 265) of man's at-one-ment with God, Mrs. Eddy says, "This scientific sense of being, forsaking matter for Spirit, by no means suggests man's absorption into Deity and the loss of his identity, but confers upon man enlarged individuality, a wider sphere of thought and action, a more expansive love, a higher and more permanent peace." Learning to hold our thought constantly to Spirit, and seeking continually to supplant with spiritual truth the false beliefs which so largely constitute human consciousness; putting our professions into daily practice, so that our lives conform to the divine, bring a clear realization of man's oneness with God and give an increasing assurance of the truth of the Scriptural counsel, "Acquaint now thyself with him, and be at peace: thereby good shall come unto thee."
