Some years ago, while living in another state, I took up...
Some years ago, while living in another state, I took up the study of Christian Science. For years I applied and demonstrated it in the working out of all my problems except sickness. I wanted to rely on it for the latter, but always put it off for some future time, feeling that I was not quite ready.
As my husband had been a student of Christian Science for many years before I met him, and had had class instruction, he did all he could to stimulate my faith in Science in times of sickness. Whenever any ailment presented itself I always asked my husband for help, which was gladly given; but I expected him to do all the work, and at the same time I wished that I dared to take some material remedy, thereby giving more power to drugs than to God. This went on for several years, and I often wondered just what I would do if some serious illness presented itself.
Finally my testing time came unexpectedly, when my husband was out of town and I experienced a severe nervous breakdown. I was forced to take my stand, so I took it on the side of Christian Science. I was in a desperate state of thought. My husband could not be reached, so I called a practitioner, who willingly gave her help. I knew I had to do my part and so I studied most of the time. After a few days I felt that I was no better, but rather worse. That night I awoke and arose feeling extremely nervous and in a state of despair. I thought, If only my husband were here; also, If I had some medicine in the house I should be tempted to take it. Then an angel-thought came and reassured me that it is God who heals, and that I did not need any material remedy, as I had decided to take my stand with God. I called the practitioner again and fought the battle of faith the rest of the night. Toward morning I experienced a beautiful spiritual uplifting. I became peaceful and went to bed and to sleep; and I improved rapidly thereafter. I have never had a desire for medicine since that healing.
I am more grateful than words can express for that experience, as it forced me up higher, and for the beautiful work of the practitioner who helped me. I am also grateful for membership in The Mother Church and a branch church, and for the Sunday school. Our two young daughters have never known anything but Christian Science. We have had many beautiful demonstrations in our home, some of which were accomplished through my own understanding.
