Subscribing and Contributing

HOW pleasant it is to be found contributing or subscribing to the world's sweetness, thus helping to neutralize its bitterness! How eagerly the world is looking for those who are willing to help it to see the bright skies instead of the gloomy clouds! What opportunities there are today for each one to do a vast amount of good!

In "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 340) Mrs. Eddy writes, "One infinite God, good, unifies men and nations; constitutes the brotherhood of man; ends wars; fulfils the Scripture, 'Love thy neighbor as thyself;' annihilates pagan and Christian idolatry,—whatever is wrong in social, civil, criminal, political, and religious codes; equalizes the sexes; annuls the curse on man, and leaves nothing that can sin, suffer, be punished or destroyed."

How illuminating it is to realize that every individual can contribute to humanity's advancement toward the goal set out in these words, so that all men may be of one Mind! Today there is no need to wring the hands in despair. Whoever desires to make peace and help to give the world the message it sorely needs, can do so by subscribing to and reading the Christian Science periodicals, including The Christian Science Monitor, which promotes international good will. "Blessed are the peacemakers." Blessed are they who support constructive good news, thus contributing to the peace of the world. Blessed are they who are helping to meet the need of humanity for purer thinking, better health, fuller acquaintance with God, good.

Good will unites men and nullifies animosity. Well-wishers of mankind need not work single-handed and alone. They can now unite in supporting an international daily newspaper, the object of which "is to injure no man, but to bless all mankind," as our Leader writes in "The First Church of Christ, Scientist, and Miscellany" (p. 353). How good and how pleasant it is to assist in bearing to the world a daily message of assurance and good cheer! How joyful it is to awaken to the daily realization that brethren have united to express their love for mankind by subscribing for and afterwards sending the Monitor, as a messenger of good will, to every corner of the globe. Speaking the universal language of friendship, the Monitor gathers from afar and carries the tidings of increasing recognition of the power of good to defeat evil. Humanity must feel the influence of right thinking, which contributes to its welfare. As this increases, the song of thanksgiving becomes louder and sweeter as the healing Christ, Truth, is lifted up.

The brotherhood of man is established as men are found to be linked in the one truth. The spiritual perfection of man is now being brought to light by demonstrable Science. Now is the time for those who love mankind to help "every one his neighbour" to grasp this truth as revealed in Christian Science. Now is the time to encourage world workers who are laboring for the true welfare of humanity.

Subscribers to the Monitor give a friendly supporting hand to the righteous activity which seeks to appreciate everything good and beautiful wherever it may be found. They are strong links in the armor of righteousness, counteracting lawlessness. Subscription to the Christian Science periodicals is not then a mere matter of dollars and cents; it is a loving contribution to the establishment of the kingdom of heaven on the earth, showing the beauty of real life, that the ashes of disappointment may be discarded. This loving support pours out the oil of joy in the omnipotence of good, as an antidote for self-pity and discouragement. It envelops the earth in the garment of praise, for the light is come which reveals God not as the sender of afflictions, but as the destroyer of all evil.

The founding of an international daily newspaper was among the "greater works" of Mary Baker Eddy. Supporting the periodicals she established enables unselfed love to find a way to express itself, giving sweeter breath to the world through the clean and helpful pages of the periodicals.

Subscribers to the Christian Science periodicals are engaged in the business of sharing with mankind their knowledge of the truth about God and man. Everyone is needed in this business. Dividends are found in the healing and regeneration of those who have learned to lean confidently on God's loving care, perhaps as a result of first reading a copy of The Christian Science Journal, the Sentinel, Herald, or Monitor, and so being led to study the Bible and our Leader's works.

To love thy neighbor as thyself is surely to see thy neighbor in his true selfhood, as God's own image and likeness. Is not every one of those whom Christ, Truth, has awakened, striving to place the pure mirror of divine Science before the needy everywhere, that they may behold man as God sees him and be free? Has not our Leader placed at our disposal the means for satisfying this desire? Is anyone tempted to be discouraged over anything? Let that one commence to seek ways of encouraging others to rely on God. Let that one seek to discourage evil, whether as crime, oppression, or depression, through subscribing to the periodicals which combat evil as unreal, and the result will be increasing confidence in the power of good. Is there someone who is burdened with a sense of lack? Let him contribute to the agencies which combat depression with the truth, and the sense of lack can be diminished. We can all ask ourselves, Are we accepting the world's discouragement and gloom, or are we subscribing to the reporting of whatsoever things are lovely and good, thus helping in the overcoming of whatsoever things are base?

The Christian Science Monitor, engaged as it is in the effort to check crime, to maintain law and order, to diminish evil in every guise and form, is a valuable asset to the world. And as each subscription to it is Love-inspired, the Monitor will find access where it is most needed.

In Isaiah we read, "They helped every one his neighbour; and every one said to his brother, Be of good courage." Everyone can help his neighbor today by holding before his thought the grand and noble ideals of Christian Science, which enable him to carve out his own life according to the true pattern. Should the suggestion tempt us that our one subscription does not amount to much, we can silence this argument by remembering the example of our Leader. That it is possible for one individual to benefit many others we have proof. Did not she, alone, discover and reveal the Science of Christianity? We can do our part towards making her discovery known to all humanity.

The world is crying out for peace and security. Contributing toward meeting this need is true subscribing. The few humble fishermen on the Sea of Galilee were instructed by the Master to "cast the net on the right side." It is casting the net aright that counts. We become fishers of men as we subscribe to the periodicals that draw human thinking to the Christian Science textbook, which unlocks the Scriptures and reveals the truth about God and man.

Truly, as our Leader has written (Science and Health, p. 79), "Giving does not impoverish us in the service of our Maker, neither does withholding enrich us."
