The Lectures

Introductions to Lectures

Peoria, Illinois (First Church).

Lecturer: Gavin W. Allan; introduced by Paul G. Woerth, who said:—

In our family we have experienced many healings in Christian Science. Some years ago my wife became so ill with pneumonia that the end seemed near. In the morning a practitioner in a distant city was telephoned, and by absent treatment my wife was healed. In fact, that very afternoon she was able to leave her bed.

A young girl, nine years of age, was operated on for blindness by the physicians. This work was kindly done by them without expecting or receiving remuneration. When these operations proved unsuccessful she was committed to the State Institution for the Blind. At this time we adopted her, and treatment was begun in Christian Science. In a comparatively short time she entered school, took music lessons, and was able to do her work without even the aid of glasses.

Those of you here this evening who may be troubled with various problems and ailments, even though at this time they may seem insurmountable, can leave this auditorium healed by opening your thought to God and giving earnest heed to the message that our friend, the lecturer, brings.

Whitefish, Montana (Society).

Lecturer: Paul Stark Seeley; introduced by Mrs. Adelaide Martan, who said:—

One of the most beautiful promises in the Bible tells us, "Weeping may endure for a night, but joy cometh in the morning." Christian Science has brought this joy and peace to many who, like myself, know that we owe our lives and all the good therein to God's goodness.

Many years ago when several members of my family walked through "the valley of the shadow of death" with no hope of escape from so-called incurable illnesses, a kind friend brought Christian Science to our home and wonderful things happened. The healings were immediate and complete; and the proof of God's omnipotence was so overwhelming that my father was healed of atheism; and a healthy Christian growth was established in our family. Since then, through the application of God's law, I have seen innumerable healings of sickness, sin, grief, worry, and most of the ills that flesh seems heir to.

Brooklyn, New York (Third Church).

Lecturer: James G. Rowell; introduced by James Howard Beck, who said:—

After it was made known to me that I should have the pleasant duty of introducing our lecturer this evening, my thought went back to an experience I had had within the past eighteen months; and I readily recalled some of the introductions to Christian Science lectures that I had heard in different parts of the world, many of which included personal physical healings brought about instantaneously through the application of the teachings of Christian Science. Some of these healings made such an impression on me that I desire briefly to repeat a few of them. In the introduction to the first Christian Science lecture ever delivered in India, at Calcutta, the introducer told of being healed of epilepsy in one visit to a Christian Science practitioner. Later, he was healed of an attack of heart disease. In Tasmania, Australia, the young man who introduced the lecturer told of being healed of war wounds simply through reading the Christian Science textbook. Later, after being so badly gassed that he was totally blind, and had been given but eight days to live, he was completely restored to health by holding to the few simple statements of the truth he had learned from the textbook. Time would not permit me to share with you some of those I heard in New Zealand, Java, Netherlands India, China, Japan, and the Philippine Islands, all of which could be cited as proclaiming "the universal activity and availability of Truth" (The First Church of Christ, Scientist, and Miscellany, p. 353).
