The Lectures

Introductions to Lectures

PITTSBURGH, PENNSYLVANIA (Second Church).

Lecturer: Bicknell Young; introduced by John B. Paul, who said:—

At the conclusion of the world war, the Premier of France said to a Christian Science Welfare Worker in Paris, "What the world needs most now is a joyous religion." My friends, that need is most urgent today. Christian Science is a joyous religion because it brings to mankind a perfect solution for every problem in human experience. Christian Science enables men to dwell here and now in the kingdom of God, which Paul describes as "righteousness, and peace, and joy in the Holy Ghost."

Recently I was confronted with a difficult situation which resisted every human effort to meet it. In the light of Christian Science I was led to lay aside all human plans and efforts and to place the entire problem in the care of infinite Mind. My thought was filled with the peace and joy that come from an understanding of God as divine Mind, ever available in time of need. In a few hours the solution of this problem presented itself in such an unexpected way as to prove conclusively to me that when we place our problems in the care of divine Mind, the solution is always above and beyond all human planning.

WILMINGTON, DELAWARE (First Church).

Lecturer: Hon. William E. Brown; introduced by James William Barker, who said:—

In the present stirring and testing times, we must admit that humanity's greatest need of the hour is for absolute freedom from its seeming sorrow, suffering, sickness, lack, and despair. The good to be seen through the midst of it all is that the human mind under stress of these conditions is brought to the realization of its own helplessness, and is impelled to seek refuge in that unfailing source, divine Principle, which holds the destiny of man secure.

Christian Science is engaging attention because it shows that goodness and happiness are one and the same thing. It then proceeds to make us happier by making us better. What this Science has accomplished in adding to the sum of human happiness entitles it to respect, and to the patient and earnest consideration of all thinking people.

TORRINGTON, CONNECTICUT (Society).

Lecturer: John Randall Dunn; introduced by Mrs. Donna R. Henrietta, who said:—

When teaching in the temple at Jerusalem one day, our Master, Christ Jesus, said to those seekers for Truth who were gathered about him, "Judge not according to the appearance, but judge righteous judgment." Since then thousands of men and women have accepted him as their Saviour; but because they have not understood his teaching the world has continued to judge according to the evidence of the material senses, and has thus based its reasoning on material premises.

Such false reasoning led me into a state of weakness, sorrow, and helplessness before I became a student of the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy. Through the study of this wonderful book, however, I learned to judge according to God's law of love; and I was strengthened, comforted, and given confidence in proportion to my obedience to this divine law. I learned that to know God is to love and to trust Him, and to find Him an ever present help. I am grateful beyond words for Christian Science, which has brought me this priceless understanding.
