From the Field
[From the Annual Report of work at California State Prison, San Quentin, under direction of Fifth Church of Christ, Scientist, San Francisco, for Churches of Christ, Scientist, San Francisco]
It is with a feeling of gratitude that we submit the following report. The men as well as workers from other departments express an increasing appreciation for the Christian Science activities. The director of the religious department, in addressing the men at a recent meeting, spoke kindly of the Christian Science work in the prison, and padi our Monitor a tribute. It is encouraging to note an increasing attendance at the Sunday service.
The two lectures given during the year were a great help in promoting the interest in Christian Science. Many of the men had never attended a lecture, and in some instances had never heard of Christian Science before entering the institution.
About twelve hundred men are reading our Monitor daily, and this last month four hundred and eighty Sentinels and one hundred and twenty-five Journals were distributed.
One of the workers visits the prison each Saturday to interview the men who request appointments. An average of twenty-one men have been interviewed weekly. A large number have asked for help in Science, and the sincere appreciation for the work done is truly gratifying.
The warden, his officers and men, as well as the medical, educational, and religious directors, have given us the kindest cooperation and support.
Christian Science church services are held in the Women's Department at San Quentin prison every Sunday morning at 9.45. They are well attended, and a very active interest is shown in joining in the singing of the hymns, in the Responsive Reading, and in the Lord's Prayer; and much joy and healing are expressed as a result of the reading of the Lesson-Sermon.
The cooperation of the superintendent and her matrons, several of whom are interested in Christian Science, and take turns in attending our services, gives the workers a sense of satisfaction.
