Honest Effort

It becomes increasingly apparent to the student of Christian Science that consistent honesty of purpose is requisite to a steady progress Spiritward, where the "peace of God, which passeth all understanding," reigns. When confronted by conditions of inharmony, the honest student knows that these have not resulted from obedience to the rules of Christian Science. If unconquered habits of erroneous thinking or lack of alert watchfulness have betrayed him into a difficult situation, he can always try again with renewed effort, and with gratitude that God's "mercy endureth for ever," as the Psalmist tells us.

The student may be tempted to try to adjust things by means of human methods and according to apperances; but if he is turning to God for guidance he will cling more and more to Him and His perfect idea, as revealed in Christian Science, and less and less to the false concepts of mortals as being subject to mistakes of their own false believing and at the mercy of those of others. He will not allow self -righteousness to dull his ability to separate the real from the unreal. Rising above self-condemnation, he will gladly outlaw whatever he knows does not conform to the commandments of our Master, Christ Jesus, and to the rules given in our textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy. With clearness and humility he will set himself to keep these commandments, knowing that there is no power opposed to God, good.

"Honesty is spiritual power," our Leader writes on page 453 if Science and Health. Therefore honest effort to see creation as God knows it, faithfully affirming and realizing God's perfection and His loving care for all, and regarding no false condition as real, either in one's own or in another's experience, at once enlists spiritual power.
