Unfoldment

There dwelt within the chalice of my heart
An angel-thought. I bound its radiant wings,
And held it captive lest it should depart.

Alas! too soon its song was heard no more,
Imprisoned wings trailed sadly in the dust;
All joy and spontaneity were o'er.

I rent asunder the restraining bars,
And left it free to heal and bless mankind;
To rise unfettered to the very stars.

For I had learned pure thoughts from God proceed,
Inspiring good, which shared must multiply,
And pointing upward meet all human need.

And then, behold, where one had dwelt before,
There thronged a myriad host. I freed them all—
To find within their place a million more.
