Your issue of May 28th contains a letter on the subject of Christian Science, which needs correction. The writer says he had read a lecture on the subject in a former issue of your paper, but "failed to find any argument to convince [him] that it is either Christian or scientific."
Christian Science is Christian, for it is based on the teachings and practice of Christ Jesus. Thousands throughout the civilized world today are proving, by healing the sick and reforming the sinner through the spiritual understanding of the Bible which Christian Science reveals, that this method conforms to that of our Master.
Christian Science is scientific, for it is based on divine Principle, and is demonstrated through the application of spiritual laws. It is an exact Science, as ever growing multitudes are proving in daily life.
Our critic is opposed to the idea of God as Principle. Principle means cause, origin, source. God must be the divine cause, origin, and source of all that is real; and being infinite, omnipresent, and omniscient, He cannot be anthropomorphic in character. Is not our critic forming his concept of God from his concept of mortal man, who never was made in the image and likeness of God?
The statement, "God is All-in-all," could never be considered as pantheism when God is understood to be Spirit. Like produces like. Spirit produces the spiritual universe, including spiritual man. Matter is the opposite of Spirit, and cannot express Spirit. Christian Science teaches with absolute clearness how to understand God as infinite Mind, infinite Love, and infinite Truth. It is impossible for anyone to conceive of infinite Truth as being contained within the limits of physical personality. Truth must be eternal, omnipresent, immutable, harmonious, immortal, spiritual, and divine. All that is material is finite, temporal, mutable, and relative. There is no absolute material truth. Humanity is finding this out; hence the ever growing desire for the spiritual truths which Christian Science is revealing to this age.
