In "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures"...

In "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 11) Mrs. Eddy says, "Prayer cannot change the unalterable Truth, nor can prayer alone give us an understanding of Truth; but prayer, coupled with a fervent habitual desire to know and do the will of God, will bring us into all Truth." As I have sought to express those desires, to make them active, my prayers have always been answered, and healings have taken place.

No matter how tenacious mortal mind claims to be, it can be proved powerless, if the desire to be healed is wisely, actively, and understandingly expressed in the demonstration of God's power and omnipotence. Over three years ago, when I was still in high school, I had a growth on one of my feet, supposed to have come from swimming in the high school pool. With the help of a practitioner and after a few months of struggling with the error, months in which many false mortal opinions were discarded, the growth fell from the foot. During these months I had not been permitted to go into the pool, and when the growth was gone I was told that the time I had lost at this work did not have to be made up. This proved to me even to a higher degree that my desire and prayer had already been fulfilled before I realized it.

That same year our class in chemistry was working an experiment with sulphuric acid. In the process of the operations, during the transfer from one bottle to another, a tube of the acid was spilled on my hand and the sleeve of my sweater. I immediately grasped hold of the fact of the real man's perfection and wholeness; and on the way to the next class I talked to a practitioner. By the time I had arrived at my class the only evidence that anything had happened was the great number of holes in my sleeve. Here again the desire to see and realize only the good was answered and I was protected.
