In the Bible we read, "The blind receive their sight, and the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, and the deaf hear." As in those times, so today, Jesus' words are fulfilled, "He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also."
Blessed is the man to whom it is given to stand before all the world as a witness to the healing power of Truth, and to proclaim God's glory, to praise Him "who healeth all thy diseases." Before I came into Christian Science my life had been full of suffering. All that medical aid had to offer was done for me. I had submitted to a great many operations, but without permanent benefit.
From the age of four I had suffered from an affection of the ears for which I was operated on twice; and although I was kept alive, the ear trouble was never healed. Every physician who was consulted stated that later I should become totally deaf, inasmuch as my right ear had no drum skin, and the drum skin of the left ear was all hardened. This prediction seemed to come true. After the death of my father a so-called incurable heart trouble was added to my suffering, so that I was almost unconscious and prostrate.
Yet "man's extremity is God's opportunity." My family's attention was drawn to Christian Science, and as a last resort God was appealed to for help. The healing was a rapid one, for upon awakening I was soon able to sit up in bed; and I learned to walk again. At that time my eyes were also healed, instantaneously. When our revered Leader's textbook was given me I was angry, for I could neither appreciate nor understand it. However, I reflected upon the statements of Truth which I had heard, and the words in the Bible that God is "the light of men" came to thought. I may not have understood the true significance of the word "light," but suddenly I was so filled with joy and gratitude that after a period of total blindness I could see. As a result of further search and study my eyes are now completely healed. The glasses which I wore for sixteen years have never been used again. The deafness also vanished into nothingness.
Words are inadequate to tell of the many blessings. I am grateful for the great privilege of serving in our movement, particularly for being allowed to teach in the Sunday school. It is my most sacred wish and endeavor to be not only a hearer, but also a doer of the word. Thanks be to our beloved Leader, whose inspired writings show us the Christway.—(Miss) Jenny Berner, Blumenau, Santa Catharina, South Brazil, South America.
