When I first became interested in Christian Science I...

When I first became interested in Christian Science I was in a bad condition, both physically and mentally. I could neither eat nor sleep, and was in pain most of the time. I had to give up my position as a teacher of cooking. The loss of one of the family left me with the responsibility of two homes, the care of an aged father, and the necessity of helping him with his business. I was daily getting thinner and weaker, and felt something had to be done quickly. I had heard of Christian Science through the healing of others, but regarded it as rather a hypnotic influence. I also had become much dissatisfied with religion, finding no comfort in the church in which I was brought up, or in other churches, although I had always believed in the teachings of the Bible.

Never shall I forget the first visit I made to a Christian Science practitioner. There was such a sense of peace and harmony that I felt I had found something to help me out of all difficulties. After that first visit I could sleep better, and eat whatever I wished without discomfort. I was much happier, and felt like singing instead of crying. There was a marked change from that time, and friends noticed how much better I looked and acted. My father was delighted at the improvement.

Several years after that, at the birth of our daughter, everything was done for me in a material way and every kindness shown me, but the doctor thought that unless conditions changed I could live but a few days. My husband, who did not believe in Christian Science at that time, sent to the practitioner who had helped me before, as he did not wish to leave anything undone which might help. From that time the discordant symptoms disappeared, and I began to gain. I felt very grateful, for I was much needed in the home. That next year seemed hard, but through the help of Christian Science I was able to care for my child and do other necessary things.

Another time, when running over some uneven ground, I turned my ankle and fell. The pain was so severe that I fainted. However, that same afternoon I was able to gather Mayflowers, scrambling through the woods and brush with very little inconvenience. The ankle was soon all right, and that week I was able to do all that needed to be done. This healing was accomplished through the understanding that there are no accidents in divine Mind, and by refusing to admit for a moment that anything wrong had happened. I have also been healed of rheumatism.

I am increasingly grateful to Mrs. Eddy for her consecrated life, for the time and devotion she gave to help the suffering world gain health and freedom. I am also grateful to all those who have helped me in hours of trial. Through the understanding of Christian Science, as taught by Mrs. Eddy, I am able to help others. I have seen healings of many different diseases. The sorrowing have been comforted, and needs have been supplied.—(Mrs.)Alice Champney Wyer, Woburn, Massachusetts.
