The Lectures
Introductions to Lectures
Cristobal, Canal Zone (Society).
Lecturer: Paul Stark Seeley; introduced by Mrs. May Baer, who said:—
It is with a heart full of gratitude to God and to our beloved Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, that I can testify to its healing power. Before I took up the study and application of Christian Science I had suffered for years with a severe case of stomach trouble. I tried all material means, and was treated by many noted stomach specialists—all to no avail. The last physician who treated me told my husband there was no use taking his money any longer as nothing more could be done for me. It was then that Christian Science was presented to me. As a last resort I accepted it, and with the help of a loving practitioner was healed in a very short time. I am only one in thousands who have demonstrated that Christian Science brings courage to the discouraged, joy to the joyless, and love to the disconsolate.
Baton Rouge, Louisiana (First Church).
Lecturer: Judge Frederick C. Hill; introduced by Mrs. Anna L. Edwards, who said:—
I hope that no one in this audience may have the same opinion that I first had of the subject of Christian Science. However, my viewpoint was quickly changed after witnessing the healing of a dearly loved member of my family. This healing was of astigmatism, in such an aggravated form that she was unable to recognize even members of her family. Materia medica offered no relief, and surgery only one chance in a hundred, and frankly advised against an operation. In this seeming stage of utter hopelessness and helplessness, Christian Science was offered to her. Fearing ridicule, her first visit to a practitioner was a secret one, but when she returned from her second visit she brought a copy of the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy. The practitioner asked that this be read to her while absent treatment was continued. I was glad to read to her because it pleased her, but I did not think that reading any book would heal her. To my great surprise in less than three weeks she was able to read the textbook for herself, and before two months had passed she was absolutely healed. I found that I had been healed of a chronic complaint of many years' standing. Another member of the family was healed of the tobacco habit, a habit that he had accepted for over thirty years. My amazement gave place to a very earnest desire to know more of this power of God that I had not only seen but felt. My investigation has extended over more than twenty years and I have never found anything but good.
Los Angeles, California (Thirtieth Church).
Lecturer: A. Hervey Bathurst; introduced by Mrs. Mary H. Reddig, who said:—
This evening you are to hear a lecture on Christian Science, which is healing the sick and sinning, bringing peace and harmony to all who will take the understanding of Truth it gives for their daily guide. I can bear witness that a knowledge of Christian Science makes a demonstration of divine Love possible. I was healed of a so-called incurable disease. The Christ, Truth, has been my only physician for over nineteen years, healing all physical ills that have come upon me during that time. The understanding of Christian Science gained through the study of the Bible and "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy has enabled me to meet with courage all problems.
Shanghai, China (First Church).
Lecturer: Dr. Albert F. Gilmore; introduced by Cyril Horace Whitaker, who said:—
I became interested in this inexhaustible religion some fifteen years ago, and when I was deciding whether I should change from my old religion to Christian Science, my mother, who had just commenced the study of it, said, "If you let Christian Science go, you will be losing the best thing that ever came into your life." That statement I know to be true. Soon after that, through the teachings received in the Sunday school of a branch Church of Christ, Scientist, that I attended, the significance of Christian Science dawned upon me and with it came the desire to learn all I could about it. I found that I could at once put it into practice in my daily experience. I had many small physical healings, and as my understanding has grown so a sense of peace and assurance has come to me, such as nothing else but a demonstrable knowledge of God could give. I might liken Christian Science to a lawyer who comes to a man to tell him of a rich inheritance which has been left him and of which he was quite unaware. If he does not claim it he will not benefit by it, but if he claims it and establishes his identity, unlimited possibilities open up before him. He has only to claim what is rightfully his. We are all the children of God and can inherit only that which is good.
Arlington, Massachusetts (auspices First Church, Cambridge).
Lecturer: Miss Margaret Murney Glenn; introduced by Torrance Parker, who said:—
Monotheism, or the belief that there is but one God, is now generally accepted throughout the civilized world as the true basis of all religion. The Jews, Mohammedans, and Christians are professed monotheists. If you were to ask any one of the individuals with whom you daily come in contact if he believed that there is only one God, he would probably answer, "I do." But does he? Does our rich friend who devotes all his time and efforts to the accumulation of wealth, worship the great Giver of every good and perfect gift who supplieth all our needs? Or does he rather worship either some old heathen god of material pleasure or that dreadful demon the fear of lack? When we start out in the morning saying to ourselves, "I must be very careful today not to get my feet wet, not to sit in a draft, not to eat anything that may disagree with me, not to overdo, nor underdo," are we worshiping the God who is divine Love, the source of all harmony and peace, and whose everlasting arms are always underneath? Or are we worshiping that fearful devil whom Jesus called "Satan"? Some are worshipers of diet, of exercise, of climate, of social ambition or "society," all of which are gods of matter, as material, my friends, as the crudely nicked block of stone to which the savage kneels and prays. But nearly two thousand years ago, Christ Jesus said to the woman of Samaria, "But the hour cometh, and now is, when the true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth."
Patchogue, New York (First Church).
Lecturer: Hon. William E. Brown; introduced by Mrs. May A. Jeschke, who said:—
Mrs. Eddy tells us in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 254) that "when we wait patiently on God and seek Truth righteously, He directs our path." Some years ago a very dear relative of mine, who had suffered from childhood with what the doctors called chronic catarrh, and had not been helped, turned to her Bible and read this: "Is any sick among you? let him call for the elders of the church; and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord: and the prayer of faith shall save the sick, and the Lord shall raise him up." She then turned to a Christian Science practitioner for help, and to her amazement was completely healed in a very short time. A few years later she had another beautiful healing, that of inflammatory rheumatism. This was the first healing I had ever witnessed in Christian Science. Since then I have witnessed and experienced many wonderful healings, and for over fifteen years Christian Science has been my only help.
