The Lectures
Introductions to Lectures
Three Rivers, Michigan (First Church).
Lecturer: Charles V. Winn; introduced by Miss Edith Lamar Burch, who said:—
Centuries ago the prophet Isaiah voiced the universal call of Truth when he said, "Ho, every one that thirsteth, come ye to the waters." Christian Science is reechoing this appeal in our age, reechoing that God's help is available to all who are longing for it, and demonstrating that it does purify from both sin and sickness. This was proved to me many years ago when my family had been told that there was no hope of my recovery from a severe affection of the lungs. We were told of Christian Science, and through its teaching of God's ever present help I was completely and permanently healed. With the physical healing came the beginning of spiritual thinking, and some knowledge of what it means in the Scripture when it says that "God created man in his own image."
Lausanne, Switzerland (First Church).
Lecturer: Algernon Hervey Bathurst; introduced by Marius Edouard Gillieron, who said:—
On all sides troubled humanity is seeking a remedy for its ills in material means; but in vain, for the present-day world is full of unsolved problems. Yet I know from experience that when one draws near to God, intelligently, he finds the solution of all his problems just as surely and naturally as darkness disappears at sunrise.
Through the study of the Bible in conjunction with our textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, I have had the privilege of solving serious financial problems and of counteracting the effects of the slanders of which I was the victim. I have been healed of a nervous trouble which had annoyed me for many years. When I recall those dark days I cannot help marveling at the power and greatness of Christian Science. In speaking of Christian healing the Bible says, "The leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations."
Christian Science reveals the tree whose leaves are a healing balm, bringing to all hearts which receive it a greater measure of peace, health, prosperity, and happiness. It does not turn from the weak, outstreched hand, nor does it snuff the guttering candle. Christian Science is not a new theory of mortal mind. It is the absolute Science of divine Mind. It is the message of Love, revealing the Christ, which calls athwart the dark vision of mortal existence, "Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest."
Boston, Massachusetts (Second Church).
Lecturer: Rev. Irving C. Tomlinson; introduced by James Potter Brown, who said:— Perhaps I could give no better introduction to this lecture than to tell you of one of the advantages of Christian Science which I have witnessed; namely, that of the healing of false appetites. Before I became interested in Christian Science I knew of an officer in the United States Navy who was given to the use of intoxicating liquor to such an extent that he had been court-martialed. After I took up the study of Christian Science, I learned that this officer had also become a student of it. Several years later I met him one Sunday at a Christian Science service in a foreign land. He was a fine-looking man with a clear eye and a clean, straightforward look in his face. I do not exaggerate when I tell you that he looked as though he had never had a drink of liquor in his life. He had been completely healed of this habit through Christian Science. He has remained healed during these seven years and is now a successful and respected officer in our naval service.
Salt Lake City, Utah (Second Church).
Lecturer: Paul A. Harsch; introduced by Sidney C. Fuld, who said:—
Christian Science has helped me in overcoming false beliefs that for years seemed real indeed. False beliefs of sickness, burden, limitation, poor business, continually presented themselves. Then a floodlight of Truth was brought into my consciousness through Christian Science and these false beliefs began to fade. A lie about anything loses all semblance of reality when the truth about it is learned. I found that through the realization of the all-power and ever-presence of God, of good, a belief in evil was dissipated. Knowing that God's infinite, limitless, boundless resources, spiritual ideas, are ever present and available to man brought into my human experience an improved sense of substance and supply, and the false beliefs of lack and limitation lost their semblance of reality.
