The New Publishing House
An opportunity has been offered to Christian Scientists to aid in the building of a new and larger Publishing House; and, eager to see God's reign established upon earth, they will prayerfully seek to find ways in which to help in this undertaking.
One student of Christian Science began by thoughtfully considering the words "publish" and "house." To publish is "to make public; to proclaim to all people." And in her interpretation of the last clause of the twenty-third Psalm, Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, has written, "I will dwell in the house [the consciousness] of [love] for ever" (Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, p. 578). Inasmuch as all right mental activity is made manifest, it is evident that to help in the building of the new and larger Publishing House every individual worker needs to renew and enlarge his consciousness of divine Love; to become a more efficient publisher of the truth.
The Master, Christ Jesus, commanded that the gospel be preached to every creature; and mankind is waiting and longing for the glad tidings of salvation from sin, disease, and death which Jesus brought to humanity. Our beloved Leader, who was divinely inspired to explain this glorious gospel to a waiting world, has written (ibid., p. 570): "Millions of unprejudiced minds—simple seekers for Truth, weary wanderers, arthirst in the desert—are waiting and watching for rest and drink. Give them a cup of cold water in Christ's name, and never fear the consequences." As millions of receptive ones are patiently waiting and watching for this truth which tells them of man's freedom from sin, sickness, sorrow, and death, students of Christian Science should strive to enlarge their ability to present and spread this good news to all mankind.
To enlarge his capacity for publishing the truth, the student must, then, first of all seek to fill his consciousness to overflowing with thoughts of God's goodness, presence, and power; His nearness, availability, and infinite love for all His children, as made manifest through His eternal, ever healing Christ. He must strive to think only the truth about his fellow men, emulating the Master's example as illumined by Mrs. Eddy's words (ibid., pp. 476, 477): "Jesus beheld in Science the perfect man, who appeared to him where sinning mortal man appears to mortals. In this perfect man the Saviour saw God's own likeness, and this correct view of man healed the sick."
A provision has been made for Christian Scientists to speak of the healing power of Truth at the right time and in the right place in the Wednesday evening testimony meetings. There is a wonderful opportunity here for enlarged activity, for renewed and consecrated effort to give a cup of cold water to the waiting ones. Surely all may let their actions and their fidelity to Truth be a constant source of encouragement to those who watch and long for salvation. In the Sunday school is given fitting and precious occasion to teach the truth of Christian Science. Here one may help to enlarge the child's consciousness of the truth, that he may, in turn, go out and publish it to others.
In this age the printed word has a far-reaching influence throughout the whole world; and because of this Mrs. Eddy established the periodicals through which to give to the millions who are still waiting and watching the "cup of cold water in Christ's name." The mission of The Christian Science Publishing Society is to bring the truth, revealed in the Bible and in our Leader's writings nearer to the apprehension of all men, thereby hastening the establishing of God's kingdom upon earth. Truly, the Publishing House is dear to the heart of every Christian Scientist, knowing as he does how wonderfully it is accomplishing its purpose by fulfilling our Leader's desire that all should know the truth as revealed in Christian Science. It is sending out the true daily bread to all mankind. It is sending out the truth of God and man to all the earth, compassionately redeeming, comforting, healing, thus exemplifying the words of Isaiah, "For precept must be upon precept, precept upon precept; line upon line, line upon line; here a little, and there a little."
It is with great joy that Christian Scientists are obeying the command, "Enlarge the place of thy tent, and let them stretch forth the curtains of thine habitations: spare not, lengthen thy cords, and strengthen thy stakes;" and by obeying shall be fulfilled the promises, "For thou shalt break forth on the right hand and on the left," and, "All thy children shall be taught of the Lord; and great shall be the peace of thy children." With these promises in our hearts we can joyfully reconsecrate our lives and rededicate our Publishing House to the service of Truth.
"How beauteous on the mountains,
The feet of him that brings,
Like streams from living fountains,
Good tidings of good things;
That publisheth salvation,
And jubilee release,
To every tribe and nation,
God's reign of joy and peace!"
