The Lectures

Introductions to Lectures

Los Angeles, California (Christian Science organization at the University of California).

Lecturer: Paul Stark Seeley; introduced by George Bauer Toll, who said:—

The Discoverer and Founder of this religion, Mary Baker Eddy, discerned and pointed out in her textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 570), that "millions of unprejudiced minds—simple seekers for Truth, weary wanderers, athirst in the desert—are waiting and watching for rest and drink." But Mrs. Eddy did more than to acknowledge this desire for Truth; she established the agencies to fulfill it. Before presenting the lecturer let me say that I once had a strong prejudice against Christian Science, regarding it as a sort of soothing syrup for the simple-minded, or a semiphilosophical quackery leading people to believe that imagination would bring them whatever their hearts desired. But as I was led to hear the right explanation of this Science, I found it to be a throughly logical and practical law of intelligence and love; the prejudice was dispelled, and false ideas were corrected.

Kalgoorlie, Western Australia (Society).

Lecturer: Albert F. Gilmore; introduced by Mrs. Kathleen D. Bailey, who said:—

As I stand here to-night, it is with a deep sense of gratitude to God, who, through Mary Baker Eddy, has revealed this great truth to us through her textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures." More than eight years ago, when I had for some time been suffering from an illness, my father, who had been healed of asthma of many years' standing through the reading of this book, wrote to me and said, "If you will get that book and study it you will become well and be rid of all your sickness."

My sister, who had also taken up the study of Christian Science, came to Kalgoorlie to see me, and presented me with a copy of the textbook. It was some time before I commenced to read it, but one day while I was lying upon my bed and feeling very ill, the thought came to me, Why not read the book? I took the book and commenced to read from the beginning. It was about ten o'clock in the morning, and I became so absorbed in it that when next it occurred to me to look at the clock it was four o'clock in the afternoon. I got up from my bed well, and never from that day to this have I had one day in bed through illness.

Many sicknesses and discordant conditions have been overcome by myself and family through absolute reliance on the teaching and practice of Christian Science. It was the truth in this book that set my father free from many years of misery. It was the truth in this book that set me free. It is the truth in this book that is setting thousands all over the world free from all manner of diseases and discordant conditions.

Washington, District of Columbia (First Church).

Lecturer: Judge Samuel W.Greene; introduced by Wilbur E. Yocum, who said:—

Occasionally, a beginner may be heard to say that it is difficult to demonstrate Christian Science. May I relate a personal experience which tends to disprove that testimony? Less than six months after I had turned earnestly to Christian Science for relief from physical distress, which distress I later overcame through Christian Science, I made an instantaneous demonstration over abdominal pain which, while it lasted, was so severe that I could stand or walk only in a stooped position.

It was a Wednesday, and time to leave home for the Wednesday evening meeting at the Christian Science church. Very much as a babe learns its first syllables, I, from my brief reading, had learned the truth of the words, "God is my Life." While I did not realize the full import of the words, they comprised the only declaration of Truth I seemed able to make. And as I walked, and suffered, I made that declaration over and over again. Finally, just as I entered the church door, leaving as it were behind me darkness and materiality, all pain ceased. The reward for right thinking gained in Christian Science had come. The joy of that demonstration was indeed great. Mary Baker Eddy, in our textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 13), says, "Love is impartial and universal in its adaptation and bestowals."

Mansfield, England (Society).

Lecturer: Ralph B. Scholfield; introduced by John W. Harwood, who said:—

Perhaps the one thing which draws attention to Christian Science more than any other is the healing brought about by its loving ministrations. This is as it should be. Healing is an important and necessary element of Christianity. The Founder of Christianity, Christ Jesus, emphasized the healing works as being "signs following" the understanding of his teaching. He said, "Believe me for the very works' sake." Christian Science has reinstated primitive Christianity, and Christian Science is proving to-day that this primitive Christianity heals now just as it did in Jesus' time.

It was one of these works of healing which first attracted my attention. A friend suffering from a so-called incurable spinal trouble was healed almost instantaneously by Christian Science treatment. After suffering for fourteen years and trying every material remedy possible, I wished to know how this healing had been brought about. I therefore obtained the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy. I began to study, and was able to prove that Christian Science not only heals physical disease, but heals spiritually and morally; for during this study of the textbook I was healed of a desire for intoxicants and tobacco. It also brought to me a knowledge of the true nature of God and His creation. Before knowing of Christian Science I was almost an atheist, but Christian Science proved to me beyond a doubt that God is good, and that evil is an impostor. I was able to prove for myself that an understanding of God and His law results in the destruction of sin and disease.

Boulder, Colorado (First Church).

Lecturer: John Randall Dunn; introduced by Percy D.Shute, who said:—

Through the understanding of Christian Science, the truth that "with God all things are possible" is being proved daily and hourly. About eleven years ago I was suffering from a physical condition which skilled physicians pronounced incurable. I resorted to every material means available for relief, but the condition became more aggravated. My eyesight became so impaired that specialists declared I was going blind. In this extreme moment Christian Science was presented to me, and although I had no faith in it I consented to have what is known as an absent treatment. To my utter amazement, in a very few moments I was completely healed; my vision cleared, and I was freed from every vestige of pain. Since that time Christian Science has met my every need, whether physical, mental, or financial.

Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (Second Church).

Lecturer: W. Stuart Booth; introduced by James H. March, who said:—

It is over sixty years since the discovery of Christian Science; and since then it has been fully tested, and many thousands can to-day thank God for the healing and regeneration they have experienced through its teachings. I am but one of the many who can testify to its healing truths. For nearly fifteen years I was continually under the care of a physician and was constantly growing worse. My condition, which was tubercular, had reached a point where I was almost helpless; in fact, the last physician I consulted told me that I had only one lung and that it was of little account. It was at this time that I turned to Christian Science; and it healed me. For the past eighteen years I have needed no physician other divine Mind.

Cambridge, Massachusetts (First Church).

Lecturer: William Duncan Kilpatrick; introduced by Torrance Parker, who said:—

Recently one of my friends who is not a Christian Scientist said to me, "Isn't it remarkable how physicists and scientists of the world are becoming mystical?" It is remarkable, rather, how the physicists and scientists of the world are beginning to look away from a material basis, and to seek a spiritual governing force, or cause. This should be cause for rejoicing to all Christian Scientists, because we have learned from our study of the Scriptures, as illumined by the teachings of our Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, that there is an infinite, perfect, loving, divine intelligence or Mind called God, the only cause, who has created and who governs the universe, including man. We have proved that in so far as we reject the erroneous beliefs of the so-called mortal mind and replace them with what our understanding tells us are the emanations of divine intelligence, to that extent we realize harmony, or heaven, freedom from inharmony, physical or otherwise, in our lives here and now.

We have invited you here to-night that we may have the pleasure of giving you, by means of a member of the Board of Lectureship of The Mother Church, some accurate and trustworthy information concerning this God of ours, of whom Mrs. Eddy says on page 140 of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," "The Christian Science God is universal, eternal, divine Love, which changeth not and causeth no evil, disease, nor death."

St. Louis, Missouri (Seventh Church).

Lecturer: Professor Hermann S. Hering; introduced by Ralph G. Risse, who said:—

As our country offers freedom to strangers who come to make their home here, so Christian Science offers us freedom if we will only accept it—freedom from worry, lack, hatred, malice, disease, ill health, or any other of the myriad forms of evil which mortal mind may present. While participating in an athletic sport, I was struck in the eye by a football kicked from a distance of about five feet. For about six hours I was totally blind in this eye. Through Christian Science and the realization that eyes are "spiritual discernment,—not material but mental," as found on page 586 of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, I realized complete freedom from the blindness.
