The Lectures

Introductions to Lectures

South Shields, England (Society).

Lecturer: Miss Lucia C. Coulson; introduced by George Laidler, who said:—

It is more than twenty years since I first heard of Christian Science through a relative who had been healed of a condition which had been pronounced by a medical practitioner as incurable. I was most incredulous, and although during a period of years I heard of other remarkable healings, I continued to hold to my own convictions, as Christian Science seemed to me too transcendental. It was not until after attending a Christian Science lecture that I began to realize that Christian Science was very different from what I had believed it to be, and I was encouraged to investigate the subject further; and I am grateful indeed for that first lecture.

During my early study of the subject I witnessed in my home a very beautiful and instantaneous healing of our boy, then four years old, of pneumonia, through the application of the Christ, Truth, as taught in Christian Science. This is only one of the many proofs I have experienced. In gratitude to God for her healing, Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, after many years of consecrated work, gave to the world her textbook, which she named "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures."

Kenosha, Wisconsin (First Church).

Lecturer: James G. Rowell; introduced by Mrs. Nina G. Brown, who said:—

We are most happy, dear friends, to welcome you, for two reasons. First, because of your presence here we know you are seeking something that will bring peace and comfort to you. Secondly, because we know that Christian Science can fill these needs for you. I have proved this to be true in my own experience. I did not take up the study of Christian Science for physical healing, but for the healing of a great sorrow. For many years a dear friend had patiently presented to me the truth as taught in Christian Science. Material duties and pleasures of everyday life seemed of so much greater importance that I did not listen, until a time came when all I had striven for had gone and the world looked dark and drear. Nowhere could I find solace until I turned with my whole heart to Christian Science. Then did I first learn that God is Love, and not a God who afflicts; and as we are told in the forty-sixth Psalm, "a very present help in trouble." Words can never adequately express my gratitude for the peace and comfort Christian Science has brought me.

On page 329 of the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," Mrs. Eddy writes, "As time moves on, the healing elements of pure Christianity will be fairly dealt with; they will be sought and taught, and will glow in all the grandeur of universal goodness."

Regina, Saskatchewan, Canada (First Church).

Lecturer: Charles E. Jarvis; introduced by Howard S. Reed, who said:—

We are all more or less familiar with the Bible, through the study of which many have found light and inspiration for their daily living. But the real significance of the Bible has been much more fully appreciated since Mary Baker Eddy discovered the fact that Christ Jesus understood and worked from a definite Principle. Consequently, in the exact proportion to their understanding and application of his teachings are others enabled to do what Jesus did, in accordance with his promise as given in John, "He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also."

In Matthew's Gospel we read, "Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God." Possessing this essential qualification, Mrs. Eddy discerned the underlying divine Principle of all true being, and presented her discovery to the world in the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures." Referring to her discovery, Mrs. Eddy writes on page 109 of this book, "For three years after my discovery, I sought the solution of this problem of Mind-healing, searched the Scriptures and read little else, kept aloof from society, and devoted time and energies to discovering a positive rule."

Through the Christian Science periodicals and the Wednesday evening testimony meetings untold numbers from every part of the world are bearing witness to the overcoming of evil of every name and nature through the application of the teachings of Christian Science as taught in Science and Health; but one of the greatest blessings which accrues from this study is the quietness and peace which develop as the understanding of man's at-one-ment with God, infinite good, displaces the erroneous belief in a power unlike good.

Wellesley, Massachusetts (Wellesley College Organization).

Lecturer: Arthur P. DeCamp; introduced by Miss Elizabeth A. Thomson, who said:—

A Christian Science lecture brings a picture of the healing power of Truth—Truth which has been available throughout all ages. Christian Science is my constant comfort. It has supported me through all the years of my life, and its blessings have been manifested to me spiritually, physically, mentally, and financially. The words of our dear Leader, Mrs. Eddy, "When the heart speaks, however simple the words, its language is always acceptable to those who have hearts" (Miscellaneous Writings, p. 262), prompts me to tell you of the benefits which Christian Science has brought to me. May I say to you in the poet's words,

"Use wisely this most precious hour,
Claim gladly God's almighty power."

Parramatta, Australia (First Church).

Lecturer: Judge Samuel W. Greene; introduced by Mrs. Rachel Hill, who said:—

A lecture on Christian Science is a joyful event, for it tells of the healing power of Truth as taught and demonstrated by Christ Jesus. From the study of the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, we gain a higher understanding of spiritual truth, the truth that makes free from all discordant conditions. Within half an hour of first hearing of Christian Science I was healed of an internal complaint which a doctor had failed to heal after long and weary treatment. At the same time I was able to discard glasses after wearing them for over twenty-five years. The specialist who treated me for defective eyesight assured me that I must always wear them, and would need stronger lenses as time went on. I have not worn glasses, nor have I had a return of the internal complaint, since these healings took place nine years ago. During the intervening years I have had many other healings, but Christian Science has been my only physician.

Maplewood, New Jersey (First Church).

Lecturer: Frank Bell; introduced by Admer D. Miller, who said:—

I remember a time, about twenty years ago, when a group of three men, myself one of them, met together in Chicago, and in a mild way we had our fun about Christian Science. I also remember that it was but three weeks later that I was healed through Christian Science of an organic physical defect which threatened to incapacitate me for both work and study. For many years now, two of that group who once thought they knew so much, but really knew so little, have been active Christian Scientists.

Jesus resolved things into thoughts so that he could handle them. In the three years of his public career he was so successful, honoring God and demonstrating reality, that for two thousand years his example has been preminent in its glory.

It is related in the tenth chapter of Luke that Jesus once entered a certain village. There, with her sister Mary, lived a certain woman named Martha, who received him into her house. As the usual careful hostess, Martha was much concerned about properly entertaining so distinguished a guest. But Mary, forgetful of everything else, listened to the Master, sitting at his feet. Quite likely Martha, too, wished to hear what Jesus had to say, but she "was cumbered about much serving." "Martha, Martha," he said, "thou art careful and troubled about many things: but one thing is needful: and Mary hath chosen that good part, which shall not be taken away from her." Are not most of us like Martha, "troubled about many things," concerned first with the material things that seem to demand our attention? "But one thing is needful." In our own way are not all of us here seeking the joy that must have been Mary's as she sat at the feet of Jesus for instruction? And the good that we may learn shall not be taken away from us.

Chicago, Illinois (Sixteenth Church).

Lecturer: Gavin W. Allan; introduced by Harry C. Moore, who said:—

That Christian Science heals physical disease and other discordant conditions I am able to testify from an experience of twenty years, during which time it has been my only physician. About twenty-two years ago my mother's condition was very serious. She had undergone two major operations, spent about a year in hospitals, and the physicians had pronounced her case incurable. During a visit to Chicago she met a woman who told of being healed through Christian Science of paralysis and tuberculosis, and this friend persuaded my mother to visit the practitioner who had been God's representative in bringing about this wonderful healing. The result was that Christian Science treatment was begun and in a short time my mother was healed. In the meantime, however, she had her first contact with a Christian Science church by attending one of these lectures. As the nature and the goodness of God were revealed to her during this lecture, she felt that He was very near indeed, nearer, in fact, than she had ever dared hope to find Him.
