Mind's Control of the Body

Christian Science brings to humanity a beneficent and correct understanding of the Holy Scriptures. It reveals God, Truth, His allness and omnipresence, and teaches that He is Mind, Principle, omnipotent Love; and when its teaching is understood and properly applied, it produces harmonious results. The divine Principle of Christian Science is demonstrable and unerring. Its rules are applicable to any and every human problem; but a clear and correct understanding of the Science of Mind, Christian Science, is required in order, for instance, to heal the sick.

The inspired pages of the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, show that since God is infinite Love, omnipotent and omnipresent Mind, the only creator, His creation is spiritual and perfect, and is governed by ever present divine law. God, Spirit, the only intelligence and creator, never created matter. Mrs. Eddy says on page 469 of Science and Health, "What is termed matter is unknown to Spirit."

In undertaking to learn the lessons of Christian Science, the seeker after Truth finds that real individuality is an emanation of divine Spirit, inseparable from Him, and therefore forever sustained and supported by omnipotent Mind. Likewise, he learns that material personality is not real; that the corporeal body is but a seeming manifestation of supposititious mortal mind, and that so-called mortal man is the antipode of the real, spiritual man, whom Spirit, God, has created after His own likeness.

The question may then arise as to how the body, being apparently material and unknown to Spirit, can be controlled by the one divine Mind. Through the illumination which Christian Science throws upon the Scriptures one recognizes a precious precept in the sublime message of the great Metaphysician, Christ Jesus. In his Sermon on the Mount these words fell from the Master's lips: "The light of the body is the eye: if therefore thine eye be single, thy whole body shall be full of light." To know that God is the only Mind enables one to receive the light which purifies consciousness, increases and strengthens the understanding, and so restores health and strength. It awakens one from the dream of material sense, the belief that man lives in matter instead of in Mind, thus enabling one to demonstrate or prove that health and strength depend entirely upon Mind.

Furthermore, Jesus included these words in his statement: "But if thine eye be evil, thy whole body shall be full of darkness. If therefore the light that is in thee be darkness, how great is that darkness!" Here the Saviour called attention to the fact that evil, in whatever form it may appear, is a deceptive state of belief, which separates us from the true light. Therefore, if we desire to maintain permanent health, happiness, and joy, we must be sincere, pure, and honest. A careful investigation of the Master's sayings, and strict adherence thereto, will bring increased light to the individual consciousness, and the physical body will then be harmoniously controlled through conforming thought to divine Truth or Mind. Spiritual thoughts leaven the human consciousness and uphold the true sense of health. But sin darkens the path of light; and if one voluntarily continues to sin, he is responsible both for his sin and for the resultant physical suffering. Christian Science teaches that Mind controls all existence; but to gain the mastery over the body through the understanding that God is the only Mind, the student should also understand the claim of animal magnetism. This false claim Christian Science unmasks as the belief of mind in matter. In order to maintain health and harmony under the government of ever present Mind, one must be alert, and promptly oppose the inoculation of thought by the whispering errors of material sense.

When Mrs. Eddy discovered Christian Science she was restored to health through the operation of divine law. This was the sign of the Christianity which Jesus of Nazareth practiced centuries ago, for he healed the sick and reformed the sinner. Her spiritual vision enabled Mrs. Eddy to restore many others from sickness to health; and after her method was fully tested, or scientifically proved, our revered Leader elucidated her discovery, and gave it to the world in her textbook. On page 167 of this book—Science and Health—she makes the convincing statement: "The scientific government of the body must be attained through the divine Mind. It is impossible to gain control over the body in any other way." Demonstrating the government of the body through the divine Mind brings human consciousness into conformity with divine law and its operation, thus unfolding peace, joy, health, and contentment.
