"Pure Mind"
On page 260 of "Miscellaneous Writings" Mrs. Eddy writes, "Pure Mind is the truth of being that subjugates and destroys any suppositional or elementary opposite to Him who is All."
The word "pure" admits of no mixture or combination; hence we see in the discovery of pure Mind as the truth of being the downfall of the time-honored belief of a mixture of Mind and matter, good and evil, the pure and the impure. With this downfall one's numerous fears, forebodings, and apprehensions may be dispelled, for one beholds himself in his real being as God's image, as no longer a mixture of good and evil, Spirit and matter, but as a living witness to pure Mind, complete, perfect, and eternal. Indeed, as John declared, "now are we the sons of God."
If we accept pure Mind as the Ego, the one and only cause expressed in perfect ideas, the conclusion inevitably follows that pure Mind with its manifestation of pure ideas constitutes the whole of reality or the All-in-all of being. The materialist, who believes he lives in and because of matter, may object to the attitude Christian Science maintains towards what is termed matter, yet he will frankly admit that matter is destructible, and that sometime he will either become nonexistent or exist in Mind only.
Thinkers to-day are searching as never before for infallible, inerrant Truth, and are awakening to find that whatever contradicts the nature of the one and only creator, God, is without divine support, and must collapse for lack of foundation. Christ Jesus said, "Every plant, which my heavenly Father hath not planted, shall be rooted up." Since pure Mind fills heaven and earth, what and where is matter? What and where is disease, since there is no matter through or upon which to manifest itself? what and where is fear, since all that is actually taking place is pure Mind expressing itself continuously in perfect ideas?
Is this reasoning too abstract to be practical, too theoretical for demonstration? Not at all! Let an individual who believes that some disease is developing in his system, or that he is in the last stages of a so-called incurable disease, catch a glimpse of the fact that pure Mind is the one and only cause of all that is, and fear will give place to courage and confidence, and healing will follow in proportion to his realization of Mind and Mind's ideas as the only perfect, indestructible substance. Let another individual who is wrestling with the belief of lack awaken to find Mind as substance, infinite and ever present, and he will at once turn his attention towards gaining right ideas; and these in turn will reveal to him the necessary human footsteps which, when taken, will be the beginning of his intelligent working out of his problem of supply. And so on through the gamut of human experiences, the understanding of pure Mind will be found equal to every emergency.
In "The First Church of Christ, Scientist, and Miscellany" (p. 364) Mrs. Eddy assures us that "animal magnetism, hypnotism, etc., are disarmed by the practitioner who excludes from his own consciousness, and that of his patients, all sense of the realism of any other cause or effect save that which cometh from God." Multitudes to-day are rejoicing and humbly acknowledging Christian Science to be the promised Comforter, the one voice in Christendom unconditionally raised for the universe of Mind and the supremacy of good.
