The Lectures

Introductions to Lectures

DUBLIN, IRELAND (First Church)

Lecturer: Paul Stark Seeley; introduced by Henry Downes Beddoes, who said:—

Christian Science found me in the last year of the world war, and rescued me from hopeless invalidism, caused by it. It also enabled me to carry on with the seemingly hopeless struggle to establish a business; and due entirely to Christian Science substantial business came from wholly unexpected quarters. This happened many times. My health has been regained and my business established; but what I am most grateful for is the apprehension, even though in a small degree, that the real man is God's spiritual idea, and that God is infinite Mind, infinite unchanging Love.

SEATTLE, WASHINGTON (First Church).

Lecturer: Frank Bell; introduced by John E. Playter, who said:—

The Bible represents God as having forbidden man to have a knowledge of both good and evil. Christian Science is interpreting the Bible in a very practical way. While it recognizes that good and evil seem to be side by side in human consciousness, it provides a system of redemption, whereby the belief in evil can be eliminated and the good made operative. "Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning," says James. The individual who follows this process of assimilating the good is gaining a knowledge of God; and is thereby experiencing the new birth, thus demonstrating the real man, the man which the Scriptures call the image and likeness of God and "the Son of God."

PORTLAND, OREGON (Second Church).

Lecturer: Dr. Hendrik Jan de Lange; introduced by Mrs. Alma E. Freel, who said:—

Your presence here indicates your desire to learn more about the great work which Christian Science is doing, and of how that work is done. The Master said, "To this end was I born, and for this cause came I into the world, that I should bear witness unto the truth;" and Paul tells us that we are "joint-heirs with Christ." It is indeed a privilege to stand before you a living witness to the healing power of Christian Science. Just a few months ago I was carried into "the valley of the shadow" in an automobile accident; but through the healing truth, as taught in Christian Science, I was restored to health.

WATERTOWN, MASSACHUSETTS (auspices of The Mother Church).

Lecturer: Robert Stanley Ross; introduced by Torrance Parker, who said:—

Those of us who are Christian Scientists know that the end of education is achieved when it leads the individual to direct his thought higher than to material things; when it raises his study from physics to metaphysics, from the material to the spiritual; when it leads him to see that there must be, can be, only one cause, and that cause perfect and good for the whole universe, a cause which produces no inharmony. When he is led to grasp this truth, he knows what Jesus meant when he said, "If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed; and ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free." We who are Christian Scientists have begun to learn this lesson.

I have been freed from many forms of inharmony—from various kinds of disease, from bad habits, and from grief. For the healing and blessing which Christian Science brings we are all grateful, grateful to God and to Christ Jesus the Way-shower; grateful to our Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, who has explained to us what the teachings of Jesus mean about God, and about His image and likeness, man, and the relation between them, and has exemplified the demonstration of these teachings of Jesus to us so that we can make them practical to meet the problems of our everyday life. This lecture is an expression of this gratitude given with the hope and the knowledge that if there be any here who are suffering from the limitation and bondage of false beliefs, it will result in the uncovering and elimination of those false beliefs.

GOTHENBURG, SWEDEN (First Church).

Lecturer: William Duncan Kilpatrick; introduced by Mrs. Valborg Westin, who said:—

What is truth? and what is the meaning of life? are questions on which I and many others have sought to find an answer. I searched in various religions as well as in philosophies, but in vain. Then Christian Science came into my life and gave me satisfactory and logical answers to my questions. It is now more than twenty-five years since I began to study Christian Science, and it is with a sense of deep gratitude I can say that the more I have acquainted myself with this Science the better I have understood that every problem we meet has a right and harmonious solution, and that Christian Science gives us the key.

I was very delicate until I found Christian Science; yet I did not look into its teachings because of this. But through the loving help I got and by studying Mrs. Eddy's textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," I immediately discarded all medicine and was very soon healed of several difficult physical troubles.

Through the study of Christian Science we gain a higher understanding of God and man; and so we fill our consciousness with right thoughts, which in their turn bring healing. Both my family and I myself have had many proofs of healing, thanks to Christian Science; yes, thanks to the study of Science and Health, which reveals to mankind the truth of which Jesus said, "Ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free."

HUNTINGTON, WEST VIRGINIA (First Church).

Lecturer: Dr. John M. Tutt; introduced by William E. Ross, who said:—

Christian Science, or the Science of Christianity, is revealing and unfolding to men the presence and power of God and how to use it. Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, has written in our textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 471), that "God is infinite, therefore ever present, and there is no other power nor presence." And Christian Scientists throughout the world are proving that men when equipped with the power of God can heal all manner of sickness and physical affliction, and free themselves from the claims and fetters of evil habits and wrong desires, and demonstrate that all their needs and requirements are supplied.

I did not start reading Christian Science for any particular physical healing, but through a desire to learn more of God and of the Science of being. I am very grateful for the knowledge of Christian Science I have gained. It has helped and sustained me through all the conditions I have mentioned. It has freed me from being subject to colds, headaches, and sore eyes. It has freed me from the cigarette smoking habit that had bound me many years. Christian Science is available for you. It will cure your sickness and free your enslaved body and mind.
