Shrewsbury Chronicle

In your last issue you print a letter from Los Angeles signed by "An Old Salopian," which refers to a previous correspondence in your columns on the subject of Christian Science. The fact that there are thirty-one Christian Science churches in the city of his adoption is evidence that Christian Science is respected and honored, and is accomplishing much good.

Permit me to point out that this religion is being accepted by increasing numbers of sincere thinking men and women, who, through an intelligent, unbaised study of its teachings, find that it is preëminently both Christian, that is, based on the words and deeds of Christ Jesus, and scientific, that is, capable of proof or demonstration. To assert that Christian Science is neither Christian nor scientific is to endeavor to resurrect a canard which has long since ceased to be accepted.

Let me assure your readers that the interpretation of Christian Science teachings advanced by our critic is as far removed from the truth as it would be possible to get.

A surprisingly unkind reference is made to the attitude of Christian Scientists toward Mrs. Eddy, who has taken her rightful place as a great religious leader in the estimation of well-informed people the world over. It is regretted that a fellow Christian should so write of one whom many of his fellow Salopians love and revere for the beautiful and practical understanding of God which she has enabled them to receive through her illumination of the Scriptures.

How true are Mary Baker Eddy's words in her book, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 144):"Because divine Science wars with so-called physical science, even as Truth wars with error, the old schools still oppose it. Ignorance, pride, or prejudice closes the door to whatever is not stereotyped. When the Science of being is universally understood, every man will be his own physician, and Truth will be the universal panacea"!
