In the Preface to the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures,"...
In the Preface to the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," our much-loved Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, makes this provable statement (p. vii): "To those leaning on the sustaining infinite, to-day is big with blessings." I wish to share with others some of my many blessings, and to testify to the sustaining, protecting, comforting, and healing power of Christian Science.
When I was a very young student of this Science, my husband passed on quite suddenly. I had been a semi-invalid for over a year and was going through deep waters; in fact, it was thought at one time that I should not live through the week. My husband and I had been devoted to each other, and he felt kindly towards Christian Science. I was taken to my mother's home, where the family did everything they could for me in their way; but they were very much opposed to what they believed Christian Science to be, and the antagonism at times seemed more than I could bear. I, too, seemed to be nearing "the valley of the shadow;" and after my husband's passing for a short time there was also a desire to go. However, there came the desire to live and prove to the unbelieving eyes around me the truth of the all-power and ever-availability of God and His Christ, which Christian Science teaches us.
Prior to this experience I had been healed of a severe throat trouble through the help of a loving practitioner, so that the seed of Truth had been sown and watered in my consciousness. I had learned something of the truth which teaches us of the ever-presence and availability of Life, Truth, and Love, and I was confident that God was able to keep me. I held steadfastly to the little I did understand, as we are taught to do in Christian Science, and had the help of a practitioner; and immediately after the services for my husband I experienced a most beautiful peace and calm. I was healed of grief, and all sense of separation left me. To me this was a beautiful healing. I had experienced the truth contained in the Revelator's words, "And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying."
The physical healing came slowly, but with it came a most beautiful unfoldment of Truth. I am deeply grateful for the spiritual uplifting which came to me. Some very beautiful healings were experienced, including the healing of chronic constipation; the replacement of a dislocated organ, which a physician had said could not be healed without an operation; and the overcoming of nervous headaches in a very severe form. An attack of facial paralysis, also a grwoth on the forehead, disappeared. A dislocated joint of a toe which had caused me much discomfort in walking was healed; a severe form of indigestion was overcome; an infected thumb, which was swollen to twice its size past the first joint, opened of itself, drained for two days, and was beautifully healed. A painful injury to the spine caused by a fall was also healed, and I have had many other healings and instances of protection.
I should like to mention that these healings took place right in the midst of the seeming obstructions, in a very large family, where they were all of different religious beliefs; which certainly does prove that "one on God's side is a majority." Several times I left home, hoping to free myself from the sense of persecution, but something always took place which led me back, until I was able to see that false belief about the truth was not any part of those dear ones, and that in reality Love alone is present and has power. As our beloved Leader says in her textbook (p. 454): "Human hate has no legitimate mandate and no kingdom. Love is enthroned."
I am grateful to God for this blessed Christ, Truth, as revealed to us by our beloved Leader, and for the "key" which has unlocked the Bible to me and made me love it.
