The statement that "man's extremity is God's opportunity"...

The statement that "man's extremity is God's opportunity" has been exemplified in my case. From very early childhood a nervous disposition, nightmare, and insomnia developed into neurasthenia with an attendant nervous breakdown. Despite medical care, drugs, and medicines, I got worse until, filled with fear of insanity and dread of suicide, disheartened, discouraged, a grave anxiety to my loving wife and despaired of by doctors, I turned to God and prayed over and over again, and also tried to glean comfort from reading the Bible. As a direct result of this endeavor, I was led to seek the advice of a dear relative who was a student of Christian Science. Invited to attend a Wednesday evening testimony meeting, I went—and what a revelation! Intuitively I realized that here was that something I had been looking for all my life. Although I did not then appreciate it, from that very night I was healed of the persistent insomnia. Borrowing "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, I read it eagerly, drinking in the truths which illumined every page. Then one day I realized that God had indeed healed me, and I understood the meaning of the passage in Isaiah, "Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee: because he trusteth in thee." My whole outlook on life was completely changed. I had found God, whom I could love and turn to in every need, "our Father-Mother God, all-harmonious" (Science and Health, p. 16). During all this time I was lovingly helped by a member of the church I was attending.

For the benefit of anyone in a similar plight, I should add that my healing was a slow one; but I am grateful, as it has taught me many things and there were many faults of character to be changed by the healing power of omnipotent Truth. Take courage—never forget that, as our Leader says (ibid., p. 494), "divine Love always has met and always will meet every human need."

Mere words fail to express my deep gratitude to God; to Mrs. Eddy for her spiritual insight and unselfish life; for the periodicals, the church services, the Reading Rooms; and for the loving help of practitioners.
