About ten years after I severed my connection with the church to which I belonged as a boy, I met a Christian Scientist who lovingly and clearly presented to me a few of the fundamental teachings of Christian Science. I immediately saw that this Science must be the reappearing of the divine Comforter. This, however, did not cause me to run to a Christian Science church the next Sunday, but, instead, I thought I would investigate what others had to say about the power of right thinking. I read several books on mental power by different writers, only to find myself getting into a deeper rut.

After two years of whirlwind experience I attended my first service at a Christian Science church, and there followed a peace such as I had only known when I was a boy, free from care. Right then I realized the significance of the following words on page 110 of our textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by our beloved Leader, Mary Baker Eddy: "No human pen nor tongue taught me the Science contained in this book, Science and Health; and neither tongue nor pen can overthrow it."

But I soon discovered that my troubles were not over; that I had to be healed of sin and sickness; that I had to be renewed in righteousness. This mental conflict seemed an awful battle, but the smoke is beginning to clear away and I can now discern some of the good I have done. Some of my worst enemies have left me, such as bad temper, hatred, envy, deceit, lust, and selfishness, and these enemies took their baggage with them, namely, eczema, constipation, piles, toothache, sore eyes, the need for glasses, worn for ten years and now entirely discarded, smoking, and the craving for liquor.
