The Lectures

Introductions to Lectures

Florence, Italy (First Church).

Lecturer: Professor Hermann S. Hering; introduced by Baroness Florence d'Olevano Formosa, who said:—

Never was there a greater need for a right understanding of God than there is to-day. The world thought is awakening. People are tired of the constant battle with all forms of evil, are finding that the froth and bubble of life does not satisfy, and are turning their thoughts to deeper things, are seeking for rest and peace. In Proverbs we read, "Where there is no vision, the people perish." This vision is an understanding of God and of man's relationship to Him as His image and likeness. As we look around us to-day and see the unrest, the discord, the sin, the suffering, the hatred and envy, the jealousy, can we say that the world universally has this vision—this understanding of the relationship of God to His children?

This is what Christian Science teaches—the fatherhood and motherhood of God, His tender relationship to His offspring. This is what it taught me when it found me in the depths of despondency, discouragement, and gloom, without faith in God or man. It scattered the clouds of doubt about God and my relation to Him; it lifted fear and hate and let in the sunlight of life and love. This understanding has healed me, protected me, and brought me peace and joy. How many to-day are longing for this vision? Mrs. Eddy, on page 570 of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," says, "Millions of unprejudiced minds—simple seekers for Truth, weary wanderers, athirst in the desert—are waiting and watching for rest and drink. Give them a cup of cold water in Christ's name, and never fear the consequences."

Battersea, England (auspices First Church, London).

Lecturer: Hon. William E. Brown; introduced by Mrs. Florence Helen Boswell, who said:—

The Bible is full of admonitions to get wisdom and understanding. In Proverbs we read, "Happy is the man that findeth wisdom, and the man that getteth understanding." Before I began the study of Christian Science I believed that the more I knew about medicine and diet and their effects on the body, the healthier I would be; but this was not so. I also believed that because my father suffered from a painful and oft-recurring throat trouble, I was bound to have it; and I did. Christian Science treatment healed me permanently of this throat trouble, and released me from belief in, fear of, and expectancy that unfortunate family characteristics and limitations must be handed down from one generation to another; and in place of this man-made belief of heredity it has given me a much grander concept of God as the All-good, and of God's law of health.
