The Lectures
Introductions to Lectures
Boston, Massachusetts (The Mother Church).
Lecturer: Judge Frederick C. Hill; introduced by Mrs. Elisabeth F. Norwood, who said:—
You have come to this lecture on Christian Science for the purpose of gaining a higher understanding of God. There is no visible thing from which to start, no material basis on which to work to gain this understanding. Honesty of purpose and purity of thought enable one to know God. Our great Master, Christ Jesus, knew more about God and His kingdom than anyone who has ever walked the earth, but the fundamental truth of his teaching was not understood, so that a few centuries after his mission here was finished, the spirit of his teaching was almost wholly lost. However, in 1866, Mary Baker Eddy, who was striving above all else to know the one and only God, discovered the basic law governing the Master's words and works, and being imbued with a sincere love for all mankind, she gave to this world its greatest blessing—Christian Science.
When I was a child, after hearing Mrs. Eddy address a congregation in the original of this church, I remarked that Mrs. Eddy was different from anyone I had ever seen, and I was told, "She is different, for she knows more about God than anyone you have ever seen." Her grateful followers are learning that all may know more about God through the teaching of Christian Science and draw, as one old hymn tells us, "Nearer my God, to Thee, nearer to Thee."
Toronto, Ontario, Canada (First Church).
Lecturer: Miss Margaret Murney Glenn; introduced by Thomas C. Bruhn, who said:—
In the book of Acts we read: "Then Peter opened his mouth, and said, Of a truth I perceive that God is no respecter of persons: but in every nation he that feareth him, and worketh righteousness, is accepted with him." And on page 228 of the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, we find this statement: "There is no power apart from God."
In our home we have had positive proof of the healing efficacy of the truth as taught in Christian Science. On two occasions broken bones have been healed without the aid of a surgeon. These healings were brought about through absolute dependence on Christian Science. I have also been healed of a stomach difficulty which had kept me a semiinvalid for over five years.
Hibbing, Minnesota (First Church).
Lecturer: John Randall Dunn; introduced by Mrs. Marjory Smiley Ryan, who said:—
The Church of Christ, Scientist, was founded by Mary Baker Eddy for the purpose of reinstating "primitive Christianity and its lost element of healing" (Manual, p. 17). That this church is fulfilling its mission and that this "lost element of healing" has been restored to humanity we have daily abundant proofs. In my personal experience I have had many healings through Christian Science. My attention was first called to it over twenty years ago, when my sister was healed of what was then known as quick consumption. She was given but three months at the most to live, and she was the mother of five small children. While absent from her home and in this hopeless condition she heard of Christian Science and that claimed to heal. In her intense desire to be spared to her children she hastened to investigate it and to ask for treatment. She found that she was required to make a daily study of the Bible and the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy; and through the daily study of the Bible and the textbook, together with the treatments given by the Christian Science practitioner, she was not only quickly but permanently healed of consumption.
Chester, England (First Church).
Lecturer: Peter V. Ross; introduced by Arthur Noel Shaw, who said:—
The giving of a Christian Science lecture is always a joyful occasion, since it provides an opportunity of hearing some of the great facts about the true nature of God and of the universe, including man. The world to-day is being asked to accept as real so much that is false and fictitious, conditions which are so foreign to the man of God's creating, that it is at last turning whole-heartedly to Christian Science, the Science of true being, to find the only way out of its sin, sickness, disappointment, and woe.
Nearly eight years ago I was a dissatisfied, disappointed, and disgruntled individual. I was truly as those "having no hope, and without God in the world." I had been severely wounded during to war and had also contracted a serious to kidney complaint. Eight operations had failed to improve my condition and I had been told that I must have a ninth, and even then would be a confirmed invalid for the remainder of my life. I lost all faith in medical services, and in the God in which the orthodox church had been asking me to believe for so many years. When all material aids had failed I turned unreservedly to Christian Science for treatment, and a practitioner was called in. Help was very lovingly given and within a few months I was completely healed. I was also healed of the tobacco habit, to which I had been a slave for many years, and also of any desire for drinking intoxicants.
I began to learn that God truly "created man in his own image," and that this man is not subject to sin, disease, or any other discordant condition, but is heir to all that is good, harmonious, real, or true. I began to learn that the Christian Science God is divine Love, infinitely tender, and is ever available to all of His children.
Pullman, Washington (Society). Lecturer: Cyrus S. Rogers; introduced by Mrs. Floy Fay Beeman, who said:—
It is recorded in the Gospel of the beloved disciple, John, that Jesus said, "If ye love me, keep my commandments." Not until I found Christian Science was I able to obtain, from any source, a really satisfactory, workable answer to the question "How?" I am glad publicly to acknowledge that, for over eleven years, the study of the inspired word of the Bible, in the light of its spiritual meaning as revealed in Christian Science, has brought, each day, a little more of exact and specific knowledge of how to have only one God, how to love one's neighbor as one's self, how to heal the sick and the sinning. And each day's light is in proportion to the humility with which one is willing to put aside self, and let God rule—let that Mind be in one "which was also in Christ Jesus."
Cordova, Alaska (First Church).
Lecturer: Albert F. Gilmore; introduced by Mrs. Lillian C. Davis, who said :—
On page 201 of the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, we read, "The way to extract error from mortal mind is to pour in truth through flood-tides of Love." When our thoughts are filled with one line of thinking, we know there is no room for a second subject; so when beginning the study of Science and Health I was so deeply interested in the beautiful truths found there that an extremely severe attack of neuralgia, and also of chronic tonsillitis, from which I had not been free for a single winter since childhood, was instantaneously healed. Since that time Christian Science has been my only physician. What it did then and has continued to do daily for me all these years, and is doing for its students all over the world, it can do for you, since Christian Science is free to all.
