Health, the Consciousness of Harmony
In teaching that God, divine Mind, is infinite good, and that man is the image or reflection of Mind and therefore expresses unlimited good, Christian Science is doing more for the health of mankind than any other agency in the world to-day. For what does it mean, this great truth of God's infinite goodness? That harmony is real, and inharmony unreal! In other words, that all that is good and harmonious is real, but that sin, sorrow, suffering, disease, lack—evil in every form—is unreal.
From what has just been said it is evident that man, the real man, who is God's image and likeness, must be in the perpetual enjoyment of perfect harmony. There can be no getting away from this great spiritual fact. The material senses may argue persistently to the contrary, but the truth remains that man, the perfect reflection of perfect Mind, can know naught but harmony or health. Being God's reflection, he cannot express aught but the divine qualities, in which there is not a trace of anything imperfect or inharmonious.
It were well that the beginner in the study of Christian Science who may be in search of health, should remember these truths. Indeed, by doing so he will be greatly aided in his endeavor. And he will note in his study that in the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," Mrs. Eddy is constantly taking the thought of the student back to God, all the time striving to show that He is omnipresent, omnipotent, and omniscient, and that His creation, always at-one with Him, ever reflects His power and intelligence. Her effort is so to instruct human consciousness in divine Truth that the errors of material sense will be destroyed, and harmony or health manifested.
In thus teaching the truth about the divine nature of the real man, so that mortals may avail themselves of it and be able to overcome the weaknesses of the flesh, Christian Science is showing them how to be obedient to the will of God. For the divine will must always be that good shall reign. Christ Jesus was more obedient to God's will than any other who has lived on earth. And the reason is that more than all other men he knew the truth about God, his Father, and about the law of good, and was convinced that obedience to God's law in his consciousness and life gave him the power to annul material law, so called, and to heal the sinning and the sick. The truth he realized so clearly destroyed the errors of material sense, leaving in their place the true sense of harmony or health. This realization was almost invariably instantaneous with him. Through it, for him, the belief that time is necessary in spiritual healing was eliminated. Writing of the Master's obedience to God, divine Truth, Mrs. Eddy says on page 168 of Science and Health: "He did the will of the Father. He healed sickness in defiance of what is called material law, but in accordance with God's law, the law of Mind."
Christian Science, through the understanding of God and man and spiritual law which it is imparting to its students, is healing many to-day of deep-rooted sin and grievous disease; but the difficulty with not a few is to accept the logical conclusion which must be drawn from the truth that God is infinite good, namely, that evil in its every form is unreal. Accept this truth they must, however, if they would prove the illusory nature of sin and disease. Our Leader's words on page 11 of "Rudimental Divine Science" are true, and must be accepted in their entirety by all who would experience that "absolute consciousness of harmony and of nothing else," which is health. They are: "What seem to be disease, vice, and mortality are illusions of the physical senses. These illusions are not real, but unreal. Health is the consciousness of the unreality of pain and disease; or, rather, the absolute consciousness of harmony and of nothing else."
Health, then, should be sought through obedience to God's will, or God's law, with the understanding of the unreal nature of sin, pain, and disease, and the knowledge that the real man reflects the perfect harmony of God, divine Mind. Moreover, health is preserved by living in accordance with the divine will or law. Thus one comprehends the value of obedience to the moral law as embodied in the Ten Commandments, and to the law of love as stated by Jesus when he emphasized the command to love God with the whole heart and our neighbor as ourself. Indeed, obedience to the law of love as stated by the Master includes obedience to the moral law in its entirety, with the resultant consciousness of the harmony which is health. Hence, he who loves most, in the divine sense of the word, should be in the enjoyment of the best health.
Mortals should ponder the question of health as it is presented by Christian Science, keeping before them the fact which Mrs. Eddy states on page 120 of Science and Health, namely, that "health is not a condition of matter, but of Mind," and remembering the words of Jeremiah which so beautifully express the will of God toward us: "I will restore health unto thee, and I will heal thee of thy wounds, saith the Lord."
