Consciousness in Relation to Health and Usefulness

Consciousness is that which enables one to say with conviction: I am; I exist. The different moods or activities of human consciousness constitute what men recognize and speak of as thinking. God is the infinite, perfect Mind; hence, the activity of this divine Mind is expressed in perfect consciousness or thought. The Scriptures represent God as saying to mortals, "My thoughts are not your thoughts."

Most of mankind's thinking is of an argumentative nature. The Bible declares concerning a mortal, "As he thinketh in his heart, so is he." Thinking is the workshop whence proceed all effects in music, poetry, art, industry, science, and whose effects are manifested on the human body and its conditions. Now, mankind in general believes itself to be the possessor of a divided consciousness, which at one time thinks that which is good and at another time thinks that which is evil. This divided consciousness, thinking both good and evil thoughts, is repudiated by James in his question, "Doth a fountain send forth at the same place sweet water and bitter?" And its logical impossibility is shown by Christ Jesus in his declaration, "A house divided against a house falleth."

The age-long belief that man is both good and bad, both spiritual and material, has been scientifically and logically proved to be false by Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science. Not only so, but its falsity is being proved through demonstration in Christian Science. As one persistently and lovingly holds to the correct view of God's idea, man, namely, that he is eternally spiritual and perfect, sickness and sin give place to health and righteousness. This truth of the one true consciousness Mrs. Eddy boldly states in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 276) thus: "Man and his Maker are correlated in divine Science, and real consciousness is cognizant only of the things of God;" and she says further (ibid., p. 536), "The divine understanding reigns, is all, and there is no other consciousness."
