Over sixteen years ago I was led to take up the study of Christian Science after being partly crippled for three years and also suffering from internal troubles. I was treated by several doctors, including two specialists, but remained much the same. I was then taken to the Christian Science church in Swansea. On leaving the church I was given a Christian Science Sentinel. After reading a few articles I felt confident that Christian Science could heal me. In these articles reference was made to "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, and I felt that I must have this book at once; so the next day I borrowed it at the public free library. I began to study and practice its teachings to the best of my ability, and in four days felt slightly better. This gave me courage, and I persevered, relying on and trusting absolutely in God to give me the understanding necessary. My condition improved a little every day; and in a month I felt ever so much better and stronger, but was still unable to walk without support.
Then I went to the same church a second time, to a Sunday service. I was obliged to lean heavily on my stick. As "the scientific statement of being" (Science and Health, p. 468) was read I felt myself becoming suddenly well, and I walked out of church without having to use a support of any kind. I walked home, a distance of about two miles. I was overwhelmed with joy, and had a wonderful sense of freedom. This experience I shall never forget; and I shall never cease to be grateful for it. I was able to attend to my duties and accomplish work that was quite beyond me before. I went out every day during the following week and walked long distances. It was wonderful to be able to walk again.
At the end of the week I went to the church again, as I felt I wanted to tell someone of my joy. Although the physical healing was complete, I was troubled in thought as to whether it would last. I spoke of this to a friend at the church whom I knew afterwards as a practitioner. After a loving talk with her my thought completely changed, and I had no fear that there would be a return of the complaint.
I have been healed of varicose veins, from which I suffered for many years, and also of severe stomach trouble. I am deeply grateful for these healings, and to our dearly beloved Leader, Mrs. Eddy, for the beautiful life she lived, which enabled her to perceive the truth of the Scriptures, the truth that Jesus said would make us free. I am very grateful for the Christian Science literature; it is a constant source of joy, comfort, and guidance to me. My one desire is to show my gratitude in my daily life for all the good which Christian Science has brought to me.
