[Written for the Sentinel]
"They presented unto him gifts"
One
of the gifts the Wisemen brought to the little Lord Jesus
was gold;
Poured they out at his baby feet a treasure of wealth untold;
Naught recked he of the wealth they bore—nor yet doth he care to-day
For golden store, save grateful hearts their gifts on his alter lay.
Myrrh was another costly gift the Wisemen brought to the Lord,
Gathered in many a distant land, from many a cherished hoard;
Its entrance into that lowly place a wonderful fragrance shed—
But the little Lord Jesus noted not, nor lifted his baby head.
Frankincense was another gift the reverent Wisemen brought,
Gladly, gratefully, trustfully, acknowledging him they sought;
Closed to them were the baby's eyes, and stilled was the infant
voice,
Yet in the hush of that holy calm did their knowing hearts rejoice.
Wise men, all through the ages long, have garnered a precious
store
Of gold, and myrrh, and frankincense—those treasures the Magi
bore,
Which symboled riches they held in fee, an affluence without end—
And still do they proffer gifts to those who hallow the name of
friend.
Gold, and myrrh, and frankincense, still do all wise men bring
Out from their cherished treasuries, as offerings to our King;
Not as the world counts measure they these gifts so rich and rare,
But myrrh of gratitude, gold of service, frankincense of prayer!
